Global Initiative on Loneliness and Connection: Position Statements on Addressing Social Isolation, Loneliness and the Power of Human Connection

In this article by the Global Initiative on Loneliness and Connection (GILC), which formed in 2021 and is composed of organizations from around the world, the authors describe six position statements and subsequent recommendations for reducing loneliness and isolation as well as promoting social connection. The position statements produced by GILC reflect three key areas of global partnership to end loneliness and promote connection: awareness, collaboration and frameworks. engAGED Research Advisor Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad co-authored the article.

New Intergenerational Engagement Literature Review 

Commit to Connect, an initiative administered by USAging with funding from the Administration for Community Living partnered with Professor of Social Work and Health and Aging Policy Fellow, Dr. Shannon Jarrott, on a synthesis of more than 130 available research studies, literature guides and reports related to intergenerational practice to connect diverse youth (24 and younger) to older persons (50 and older). The literature review highlights promising practices and evidence-based strategies of intergenerational programs. Assessing the Effectiveness of Intergenerational Virtual Service-Learning Interventions on Loneliness and Ageism: A Pre-Post Study

In this study, researchers paired older adults with undergraduate students for a virtual service project and found that intergenerational virtual service-learning can effectively address loneliness and ageism.

 

Impact of Digital Social Media on the Perception of Loneliness and Social Isolation in Older Adults

Studies from 2014 to 2020 were analyzed for this integrative literature review on older adults’ use of social media and perceptions of loneliness and social isolation. Key findings show social media can play a role in reducing loneliness and limiting the barriers that can contribute to social isolation among older adults.

 

Social Isolation and Loneliness Among Near-Centenarians and Centenarians

Utilizing data from the Fordham Centenarian Study, this study investigated the co-occurrence of social isolation and loneliness in near-centenarians and centenarians. Based on differences of prevalence of loneliness and social isolation within the four study groups, researchers noted that identifying key characteristics of specific groups can help with designing tailored, person-centered interventions that address the needs of each specific group.

 

Older Immigrant Adults’ Experiences with Social Isolation: A Qualitative Interpretive Meta Synthesis

Findings from this study highlight that older immigrants are at risk of social isolation due to linguistic barriers and a lack of social connections in their new home. However, researchers identified ways to help to bolster social networks and connections including accessible senior centers and other community programs and services.

The Intergenerational University Connections program, created by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, matches university professors and their students with service-learning opportunities involving older adults at risk of social isolation. Arts for the Aging, which serves on the engAGED Project Advisory Committee, provides teaching artist training to help increase organizations’ reach to older adults. The program offers a broad curriculum to serve older adults of all abilities through both virtual and in-person formats.
