Bishop Stanovsky Says Thank You to Senator Murkowski
Bishop Elaine Stanovsky sent a letter on Monday to Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski thanking her for her recent vote against the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Referencing the United Methodist belief that health care be understood as a basic human right as found in our Social Principles, Stanovsky encouraged the senator to continue to work with other members of Congress "to find a solution to the very complex problem of providing health care ... for all the citizens in our United States."

The Birchwood Jamboree
Birchwood Camp Birchwood Camp will have a Jamboree this coming Sunday, August 13th.  This is their yearly fundraising event.  The program begins at 3 pm with a 5K Fun Run and continues with various events until the 6 pm Live & Silent Auctions.  It costs $25/person with a cap of $100 per family.  RSVP to the camp office at 907-688-2734.  Find out more here.

Conference of the Deaf Makes History
The Global Methodist Missions Conference of the Deaf, held in Texas, offered worship, talks, presentations and plenty of networking opportunities. It was also the scene for The United Methodist Church's first-ever certified lay servant's course specifically for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

How One Church Became Multiethnic
Since 2004, Garfield Memorial United Methodist Church has grown from about 200 to 1,100 worshipers. No ethnic group comprises more than 52 percent of the congregation. Laura Buchanan of United Methodist Communications reports on how the church reached more people.

Oklahoma United Methodist's Got Talent
A marching band, color guard, cheerleaders and an excited crowd set the scene in the parking lot of United Methodist Church of the Servant for a "homecoming" video featuring young ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer. The 12-year-old and the video will be featured in this season's first live episode of NBC's "America's Got Talent" on Aug. 15. Chris Schutz reports for the Oklahoma Conference.

Excellence in Clergy Leadership Provides $1.66M
The Office of Loans and Scholarships at the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), a center for leadership development across the denomination, today awarded more than $1.66 million to 206 recipients of the Excellence in Clergy Leadership Scholarship. The scholarship was created to help United Methodist clergy avoid excessive educational loan debt, minimize financial stress and build financial acumen.

Each recipient is awarded amounts ranging from $2,500 to $12,500. The scholarship recipients represent 47 of the 57 United Methodist Annual Conferences. Funding for the scholarship comes from matching donors-GBHEM, the Lilly Endowment, the 13 United Methodist seminaries/schools of theology, and  participating United Methodist Annual Conferences and Foundations. The donations included: $480,000 from GBHEM, $252,000 from the Lilly Endowment, $267,500 from Annual Conferences, $127,500 from United Methodist foundations and $532,500 from the 13 United Methodist seminaries.
