A weekly news update from The Alaska United Methodist Conference
UMCOR Responds to Harvey
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is currently working with disaster coordinators and early response teams to provide relief to the many victims of hurricane/tropical storm Harvey. Watch for updates at umcor.org and on the UMCOR social media accounts ( Facebook and Twitter:@umc_umcor).
5 Things You Can Do
  1. Please continue to pray for those whose lives have been impacted by hurricane/tropical storm Harvey. Please also pray for the Early Response Teams, disaster coordinators, and many volunteers in The Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Louisiana Conference of The United Methodist Church, Rio Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church and Central Texas Conference who are working tirelessly to provide relief after Harvey.
  2. Make relief kits.  Here are instructions. For information about getting kits to the UMCOR depots, contact Donna Waltman at dgwaltman@frontier.com.
  3.  Give to UMCOR's relief and recovery efforts. 100% of your gift to the US Disaster response will be used to respond to emergencies. This fund is already providing support for Harvey response, and by giving to it you will help that response and help UMCOR be ready for the next disaster.
  4. Donate only those items requested.
  5. Please wait for an invitation to volunteer. Recovery will be a long process, so teams will be needed for months ahead.
Hurricane Harvey Challenge to Methodists
Bishop Elaine has issued a challenge to everyone in the Greater Northwest Episcopal Area, which includes Alaska.  She states on her Facebook page, "HURRICANE HARVEY FLOOD RECOVERY. It would be great of United Methodists in the Greater Northwest gave $1 per member to support people whose lives are turned up side down. When floods strike a long way from home sending money is the best way to help immediately. So, I did. Won't you? Give a gift online or through your local church marked for Advance #901670! 100% of your donation goes straight to recovery. Four Star (highest) rating by Charity Navigator."

Watch out for Email Scams
Email scams happen all the time.  When it involves someone we know, we might be a little too quick to respond with help and then get hurt.  This past week, Bishop Elaine Stanovsky's name was used to ask for money through a transfer.  Upon further investigating, the email address did not match hers so we automatically knew it was a scam.  We want to take a moment to remind everyone to be weary of unusual emails and requests.  Look into them before responding with money.
