November 26 . . . the last clump of dahlias was divided and stored the day before Thanksgiving. It was a happy conclusion to the season. The blooms this year were mediocre from a lack of care, but the tubers were plentiful and mature. The stalks were solid near the bottom. I dusted the tubers with cinnamon, and dipped a few divisions in a VirkonS fungicide solution if they showed a brown color of decay near the shoulder.

I also dipped the cutting implements in VirkonS after each clump. This mixture is reported to be effective against bacteria, virus and some fungi. It has been endorsed by the ADS virus research committee. Finally, I have been using a oscillating “multi-tool” to make vertical cuts into the clump. It seems to be more efficient than pruning shears or a cleaver. Small cuts are made with a snap off knife. I did 47 clumps without injury. This may be too late to offer this advice. I may repeat it next year. It works for me.
December 1, seems to be a magic day for new introductions to hit the Internet. DahliaAddict.com has timely information about which sellers are open. The ADS website has a pictorial of most of the new introductions for 2022. The 2021 Awards are also listed. A 2021 Hart winner for the AA/A category is pictured left. The originator is Kristine Albrecht, photo by Linda Taylor. It's never too early to dream about or to order dahlias. Many retailers run out early. We we want to thank our ADS Bulletin advertisers and ask that you support them.

My third-year orchid (form) seedling was a disappointment. The few blooms that I saw failed to involute sufficiently. I had set out more than a dozen plants. Eleven clumps are now in the trash. It has been more than fifteen years since I had a good seedling in Amy’s Star. I believe that I will continue to buy a few tickets for the dahlia lottery.

Have a wonderful holiday season,
Harry Rissetto
