Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
May 2022

What’s new in the Dean’s office?
We are wishing Jenny Fowler a fond farewell as she transitions back to ZSFG to manage adult Pulmonary and Cardiology. May Aguirre is also moving out of the area in July 2022. Please join me in congratulating them on their incredible contributions to our campus. Their replacement recruitments are underway and we are going through some restructuring and reimaging to support our faculty on this campus. We will continue to provide navigation to all the clinical, education, research, and advocacy systems across the organization. We keep our website up to date with key information to support all this effort.
Sadly, we were planning for an in-person all-faculty spring May meeting and it will no longer be in person. We will change our focus to a fall get-together so stay tuned.
Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) was a huge success in Denver, Colorado this past April, and thank you to all the fellow and faculty presenters.
CMO Corner:
UCSF Health Annual Physician Work Experience Survey is still open. Thank you to those who have completed it. Let’s get to 70% to affect change!
Vaccine effort is still underway in the OPC basement. Those eligible faculty and staff according to CDC guidelines may sign up via My Chart. Many thanks to the Ad Hoc advisory committee on vaccines for gearing up for infant and toddler vaccines anticipated for June 2022.
COVID-19 is more endemic but still with us and we are having a few issues with folks gathering in break areas. Thankfully, we are not seeing a big increase in hospitalizations. But still, use good judgment. California data statewide and by county is here. Also, please let me remind providers about the California COVID therapeutics locator from Dr. Prachi Singh.
Let’s see this through and take time to rest and recover!

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION, and
ANTI-RACISM at UCSF BCH
| |
From Marsha J. Treadwell, PhD
DEI Co-Chair BCH Oakland
Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, UCSF School of Medicine

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.

Summer Student Research Program (SSRP)
The Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) formerly known as CHORI SSRP continues to strive for diversity, equity, and inclusion of students from underserved backgrounds interested in STEM. Over the past two years we pivoted from in-person training to providing virtual and later hybrid programming. We were able to do this while still supporting our students financially and providing a robust didactic and research mentoring experience.
Interested in Mentoring? Student interns for our 2022 program are being selected now, the program will run from June 6 to August 5, 2022. If you have an interest in hosting a student this summer, or if you have any questions regarding our program please reach out to us via e-mail at: ssrp@ucsf.edu
Mark your Calendars: SSRP will hold its 41st Annual Student Research Symposium on Friday, August 5th. Our digital Symposium Book highlights the research performed by our 2021 interns. They presented research findings in a half day symposium held via zoom- and posted on YouTube. We hope you will enjoy a glimpse into their experience and what they were able to accomplish in just 8 short weeks. For a more in depth look at how we created the first all-virtual SSRP, you can see a recent interview with us HERE.

Extramural The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Science Diversity Leadership Program

Each grant recipient will be awarded a total of $1.15 million over five years, with the first two cohorts of grantees selected in 2022 and 2023. Investigators leading the grantees’ projects will use funds to support research programs and outreach, mentoring, and teaching activities. The principal investigator must have started their first independent laboratory no earlier than January 1, 2012.
Applications are due by May 19, 2022.
