Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland

March 2025

March "Madness"

We are focusing on BCH’s clinical and academic mission and ensuring our faculty have what they need to do their work in these ever-changing times. We will continue to assist academic departments with recruitment and space needs and advocate for improved processes on behalf of the faculty.

Happy International Women’s Day! Please see below for UCSF programming all week and enjoy a few treats in our lounges on Wednesday, March 5th.

Match Day approaches on March 21st! The GME office in Oakland supporting the BCH Oakland pediatric residency is undergoing some administrative changes. Still, the residency remains unchanged and is proudly sponsored by BCH Oakland. Our expanded pediatric residency will welcome 32 interns this summer.

And congratulations to BCH Oakland-based recipients of the UCSF Health Exceptional Physician Awards! Many of our faculty working in Oakland are honored this year, and we will host a watch party during National Doctors' Day (week) on March 27th in Bertha Wright from 12:00-1:00 PM. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

A couple of reminders:

  • Masking is in effect in all patient-facing areas (hospital and clinic rooms, triage areas, and Day Hospital) through April 30, 2025.
  • Grand rounds on April 1st will focus on clinical research and feature Dr. April Zaat and Dr. David Hoskins, and several trainee projects will be available on our website via Vimeo! Stay tuned!
  • The BCH Oakland Dean’s Office is hosting a Breakfast Mixer on April 2nd from 7:00 to 8:30 AM in Bertha Wright. Join us!
  • Hal Collard, Vice Chancellor of Research at UCSF, is hosting a listening session on research needs at BCH Oakland on April 2nd from 9:00-10:00 AM in the Library at 5700 MLK. The Office of Research at UCSF will continue to provide key guidance for faculty.

I hope to see many of you at PAS Honolulu April 24-28!

Be well,

Kelley

** NEW CLINICAL CORNER

COMMUNICATION

Last month, we aligned BCH Oakland’s clinical communication platforms with the rest of UCSF Health. Personal and service pagers are now being forwarded to Voalte, and we will be turning off Spok Mobile soon. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to return your physical pagers to the operators (Main Hospital 2nd floor near the Medical Staff lounge). Trauma/code and ambulatory staff physical pagers remain active and are not currently being forwarded to Voalte.

All inpatient clinical communication now occurs primarily through Voalte (optional for outpatient providers). When covering an inpatient service, every provider must consistently log into their Voalte Role/Units. This log-in process is critical to ensure that on-service providers are reachable. Our goal is to have all East Bay on-call roles covered >90% of the time, which has been achieved by our colleagues in the West Bay (both pediatrics and adult services).

If you or anyone in your division has any questions about how to use Voalte, please refer to the Voalte tip sheet for BCH Oakland Providers or contact Mike Lang and Jason Jagodzinski.

We are now using the West Bay’s version of Amcom, which can be used as a backup to Voalte for reaching a provider who is on call. Please refer to the Amcom tip sheet for East Bay users for more information.

If your pager is not forwarding to Voalte or you are encountering any technical issues, please submit a ticket with the UCSF Help Desk by calling 415-514-4100 or navigating to https://help.ucsf.edu (use the Get IT Help button).

Masking Requirement in Direct Patient Care Areas

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series

The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.
