Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland

June 2025

June brings us so many proud moments: Parades, Graduations, and PRIDE. Congratulations to all the graduating trainees at BCH.

The Oakland trainees had a tremendous celebration last weekend at Scott’s in Jack London Square. Congratulations to the amazing graduates and to the awardees. Next year, the Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship program will reside in the UCSF Emergency Medicine department while the fellowship activities remain unchanged. Our current pediatric residents will also join UCSF on July 6th, whilst the incoming class will begin administratively under UCSF employment in early June.  Join me in welcoming the interns to the BCH Oakland Pediatric Residency program! UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland is grateful to continue its 99th year of sponsorship of this amazing training program and for your participation.

PRIDE is an affirmation of our organizational values. The “R” is for “Respect” and is my personal favorite of all. With respect comes kindness.

We also have a meaningful holiday that, as of the last two years, is now a federal holiday on Thursday, June 19th- Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865 — months after the Civil War ended and more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing enslaved people — Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free 250,000 people still held in bondage.

Administratively, as of June 1st, exempt employees are now on MyTime instead of HBS. Exempt employees will report time by exception, similarly to HBS.  Many have asked how to enter time off.  Here is a pro-tip if your time off overlaps with a day in which you do not normally work: From the landing page, click on “Advanced Options” at the bottom of the My Time Off section. A pop-up will appear that allows you to enter multiple dates of time off (i.e., Thursday and Friday in Week 1 and Monday and Tuesday in Week 2). Then click “Next” and enter the time you normally start your workday, the total number of hours of your time off, and the type of leave you will use. Then, click “Submit.” For more tools, see MyTime Timekeeping and Scheduling.

With respect and kindness,

Kelley

Narrative Medicine Resource

My name is Anoushka Sinha, and I’m currently an Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine fellow at UCSF.

Over the past three years, I’ve led a narrative medicine curriculum for pediatric residents at both Mission Bay and CHO. As an extension of this work, our team has developed a website designed to serve as a resource hub for narrative medicine across the UCSF community. The site includes materials from our curriculum and features an interactive gallery that invites users to reflect, connect, and contribute.

We’re now hoping to broaden awareness of the site among trainees, faculty, staff, and clinicians at UCSF. In particular, we’re looking for ways to encourage individuals to post reflections in the gallery and gather feedback through a brief survey to help us improve the platform. More Info

Embase

Embase is a highly versatile, multipurpose, and up-to-date biomedical database produced by Elsevier. Embase contains an additional 7 million articles from 2900+ journals that PubMed does not contain. One particular advantage of using Embase is its full-text indexing of drug, disease, and medical device data.

To access this resource, you will need to be on the UCSF network or logged in via MyAccess.
