Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
December 2024
| |
|
Approaching a New Year...
The BCH Oakland campus is really starting to transform. There is ongoing construction and relocation. There are plans for UCSF to be more involved in the infrastructure at 5700 MLK (formerly known as CHORI). It is a busy, exciting, and sometimes challenging time as you continue to do all the good work that you do. If you missed the virtual BCH Town Hall today for key masterplan updates, look out for the town hall recording via email.
Our Faculty Research Symposium is slated for April 1, 2025. This is co-hosted by our BCH Oakland CME Committee. The submission deadline has been extended until 9:00 AM on Tuesday, December 10th.
Please view our new “Clinical Corner” section of the newsletter to read about changes to IT and clinical communications that may impact your experience as a faculty member working in Oakland. Of note on December 10th, we are sunsetting Spok Mobile and physical pagers. Pager numbers will now be forwarded to Voalte (see info below). Updated winter masking information is located here. By now you should have gotten your flu vaccine.
Winter and holiday celebrations are upon us. Please do come to our Annual Holiday Event that we are Co-sponsoring this year with the UCSF Department of Pediatrics on Thursday, December 12th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. All faculty are invited, and you should have received additional info under separate cover.
Finally, the BCH Oakland Dean's office holiday curtailment will be Tuesday, December 24th through Wednesday, January 1st. Please note the university holidays are December 24th, December 25th, December 31st, and January 1st. Faculty working in clinical areas should follow the BCH Oakland holiday schedule which recognizes December 25th and January 1st.

Healthcare Careers Conference Recruitment
|
Seeking Healthcare Volunteers for the Feb 1st Healthcare Careers Conference in the Oakland Unified School District
On Saturday, February 1st from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, Life Academy (walking distance from Fruitvale BART in Oakland) will be hosting its 7th annual Healthcare Careers conference for Oakland Unified School District high school students. Historically, this has been a fun and extremely educational event for students (and volunteers!) This opportunity will take place in person.
The goal is for students to learn about the incredible variety of healthcare professions, to meet and ask questions of healthcare providers (especially UIM and those who graduated from Oakland high schools!), and to learn a touch of hands-on clinical skills if possible. Providers will be divided by organized specialty with a goal of having many different careers represented in a single room (i.e. OB/GYN with a doula, midwife, OB RN, GYN MA, surgical tech, MD, NP, etc.).

School of Medicine Bridge Funding
Applications are due by 5:00 pm on Friday, December 6, 2024
| |
|
Dear Colleagues,
We invite full-time faculty in the School of Medicine to apply for the 2025 Winter Cycle of Bridge Funding. The Bridge Funding program provides up to 12 months of support for full-time faculty members, with independent research programs, who are experiencing a temporary loss of significant funding.
The program is intended to support applicants who face a funding gap between two extramural research grants (usually R01 or equivalent). Typically, applicants have been unsuccessful in a recent attempt to renew or replace a federal grant but are likely to be funded upon submission of a revised application, based on scores and reviewers’ comments.
Applicants must demonstrate that their research program is jeopardized due to lack of extramural funding, that they have one or more rounds of well-scored but unfunded federal applications, and that they will have exhausted all available discretionary or start-up funds within one year of applying for bridge funding.
See more details about eligibility, review criteria, and the application process on the School of Medicine Bridge Funding Program page.
Applications are due by 5:00 pm on Friday, December 6, 2024. Please contact SOMbridgefunding@ucsf.edu with any questions.
Sincerely,
David Morgan, PhD
Professor, Department of Physiology
Vice Dean for Research, UCSF School of Medicine

Consider an End of the Year Gift to the Summer Student Research Program
|
For over 40 years, the UCSF Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) has placed under-represented high school and college students from diverse backgrounds into BCH-Oakland clinics and basic science labs to participate in active biomedical research projects. The SSRP provides one-on-one mentorship along with access to unique scientific workshops, seminars, trainings, clinical simulations, and networking opportunities to roughly 50 students to stimulate their interest in health science careers.
A core tenet of the SSRP is cultivating a sense of belonging, which is a key driver for a student’s ability to persist in medical and scientific fields. The meaningful relationships students build with their mentors, SSRP leadership team, program peers, and mentors provide crucial networking opportunities and community support as they embark on the next chapter of their educational journey.
Our SSRP alumni have achieved incredible success. Over 90% of SSRP alumni have gone on to pursue science majors in college and biomedical careers. And over 73% of SSRP alumni have enrolled in graduate level education, which is more than 3x the national average for underrepresented students.
We will continue to provide this important program in 2025 with applications currently open until February 14, 2025, but an unexpected funding gap occurred this year that may reduce our internship funding in half! We are reaching out to the UCSF BCH-Oakland faculty to help fund the program for this coming summer. A tax-deductible gift of any size will allow us to add more students and develop richer programming for the 2025 cohort.
A gift of $1,000 will provide much needed student research supplies,
$2,000 will provide a partial stipend for one undergraduate student,
$3,000 will provide a full stipend for one high school student
If you are considering a donation to SSRP, please contact Gwenn Lennox gwenn.lennox@ucsf.edu for details.

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series
|
The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.
