Speaking of advocacy and engagement, I spent last weekend in Sacramento at the California Medical Association as part of the Academic Practice Forum. All UC’s and UCOP get together once a year to inform health policy. Access to care in rural areas was key.

Congratulations to the 2024 Research Scholars Awardees:

Pallavi Agarwal, MD - Pediatric Hem/Onc Fellow

Krystle Frazier, MD - Pediatric Hem/Onc Fellow

Sally Oh, MD - Resident Physician

Rob Valdovinos, MD - Pediatric Rheumatology Fellow

Anh Vo, MD - Pediatric ID Fellow

Clara Woods, MD - Resident Physician

Megan Yuasa, MD - Pediatric Endocrinology Fellow

(More info below)

Finally, kudos to the wonderful execution by the CME Committee of the 54th Annual Monterey Conference held on October 25th - 27th. This year, speakers addressed the topic “Scheduled for 15 minutes, Needs an Hour: Managing Complexity in General Pediatrics.” Speakers included:

William Bernal, MD

Allison Coleman, MD

Evan D Holloway PhD, MA

Renee Howard, MD

Kensho Iwanaga, MD, MS

Milena Kaufman, DO, MS

Michelle Nakaishi, RN, MS, CPNP

Vivien Nguyen

As well as guest speaker, James H. Conway, MD. FAAP Professor of Pediatrics, Divisions of Infectious Disease & Global Pediatrics, University of Wisconsin, Madison.

November 1st starts our winter masking season. Please see the message below.

Save the dates:

School of Medicine Bridge Funding

Applications are due by 5:00 pm on Friday, December 6, 2024

ucsf school of medicine research banner

Dear Colleagues,

We invite full-time faculty in the School of Medicine to apply for the 2025 Winter Cycle of Bridge Funding. The Bridge Funding program provides up to 12 months of support for full-time faculty members, with independent research programs, who are experiencing a temporary loss of significant funding.

The program is intended to support applicants who face a funding gap between two extramural research grants (usually R01 or equivalent). Typically, applicants have been unsuccessful in a recent attempt to renew or replace a federal grant but are likely to be funded upon submission of a revised application, based on scores and reviewers’ comments.

Applicants must demonstrate that their research program is jeopardized due to lack of extramural funding, that they have one or more rounds of well-scored but unfunded federal applications, and that they will have exhausted all available discretionary or start-up funds within one year of applying for bridge funding.

See more details about eligibility, review criteria, and the application process on the School of Medicine Bridge Funding Program page.

Applications are due by 5:00 pm on Friday, December 6, 2024. Please contact SOMbridgefunding@ucsf.edu with any questions.

Sincerely,

David Morgan, PhD

Professor, Department of Physiology

Vice Dean for Research, UCSF School of Medicine

In Remembrance...

Bruce Ames passed away peacefully on October 4th.

Bruce was recruited to CHORI* by Bert Lubin where he built out the NE wing of CHORI from his own personal funds and led a lab at CHORI (1999-2019). He then recruited Ron Krauss, Janet King, Fernando Viteri, and other researchers to join the institute. Bruce received the National Medal of Science in 1998 and although there is no formal record, he was widely regarded to have been on the short list for a Nobel Prize. He influenced hundreds of young scientists and contributed an enormous amount of research, including nutrition bars, protein isolation techniques, and a test for the cancer potential of chemicals that is still used today. Beyond the accolades, Bruce was incredibly generous, supportive of his staff, and always ready to tell a good joke.

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series

The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.
