Mike's Moments:
Mike's Moments Pic 5.11

The more time I spend at the Club, the harder it is for me to find just one "moment" to write about in each newsletter. It seems that every day I am touched by one (or more) of the youth that we serve.

*Kayla is 11 years old, a very talented and bright young lady. She's quite the artist and she just completed a successful basketball season. You may have met her if you have called my phone. "Boys & Girls Club, this is Kayla speaking...How may I help you?" She's even made her own business cards that identify her as "Mike's Assistant."

Kayla is a special young lady...pleasant, respectful, talented and very mature. She has been chosen already this year as a Member of the Month at the Erickson Club. We talked one day about her family and some of the struggles she has had to endure. I'm even more impressed. She could be an example for all of us on overcoming less than ideal circumstances.

One day she came bursting into my office to show me a letter she received. It was from President Obama. Kayla was one of a small group of students selected to receive the President's Academic Achievement Award. We posted the letter on my bulletin board for all to see and inquire about. Kayla gave me the date that she would actually receive the award at a school assembly and asked me to come. I certainly could understand her excitement, but what I didn't understand at that time was how important it was that I attend the ceremony. Kayla's dad is not very present in her life and her mother works full time so she would have no one there to share in her big day. A few days passed and I received a message at home from Kayla reminding me of the school assembly the next day, and again asking me to attend. Boy, am I glad I didn't use the "I'm too busy" as an excuse. I headed over to Summit School the next day at 1:15. I think I was the only grey hair at the small but very nice assembly. When Kayla entered the gym, she saw me. Her smile was awesome and she came over to me to give me a hug. She was so proud to receive the medal that day and I was so happy to be there to share it with her. You know some days at the Club are better than others, but that Wednesday afternoon made my day....my week...one of the highlights of the year for me.

-Mike

April BGCGL Club Highlights

Total Youth Served: 929

  • In West Salem, the Club celebrated "Healthy Lifestyles Week April 18-22. Members attended a carnival at the Mathy Center, refrained from playing non-active electronic games or watching movies while at the Club, participated in health lessons and quizzes and health games,  made healthy snacks, and experienced a performance by the Northwoods Martial Arts students. Throughout the month of April, the kids enjoyed the neighborhood park where they had scooter obstacle courses, played capture the flag and flag football, and enjoyed the nice weather. Also, to celebrate Earth Week, the kids received young white pines to take home and plant!
  • Throughout the month of April, the Huber Homes BC members participated in a weekly cooking club where they learned all about healthy snacks, the food pyramid, and the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. The Huber Club kids also participated in the "Healthy Lifestyles Week" carnival at the Mathy Club! On Easter, the members participated in an egg hunt and Easter BINGO, complete with plenty of candy!
  • The Erickson Club 1st and 2nd grade kids got a visit from a group of Winona University students who came to the Club to discuss how to create healthy friendships.  The kids participated in activities that taught them how to be a good friend and how to handle situations that involve bullying. Also in April, several of the "McRunners" from the Club participated in the youth races at the La Crosse Fitness Festival.

  • To celebrate Earth Week in April, the Holmen Club members created three goals to reduce their impact on the environment, participated in a "litter-pick-up" walk and a "bike-or-walk" day, and were given white pines to take home to plant. During "Healthy Lifestyles Week," teen members participated in Zumba and Yoga classes and were offered health and fitness counseling where they came up with personal fitness goals.

  • Mathy, La Crescent, and Hamilton members
continue to meet weekly for Wize Guyz and Smart Girls. They also participated in "Healthy Lifestyles Week" where they had lessons on living and cooking healthy. The McRunners Club also continued through April and was a big hit with the Mathy members. Hamilton Club members even got to take a Heli-Pad tour at Gundersen Lutheran!

  • Members of the Schuh-Mullen Club had something exciting to do every day of "Healthy Lifestyles Week." They took a field trip to Ping Manor for bingo one day, participated in a fitness challenge, got a visit from Viterbo students who hosted a healthy eating contest, and went to the carnival at Mathy. The kids had a blast and loved all of the fun activities that promoted fitness and healthy lifestyles!
