The C.A.R.E Message…

What is your personal gift to God? 1 John 3:18 speaks to this:  Let us not love in words or speech, but in action and truth. I believe the gift of C.A.R.E is our personal gift to God-- but, not about particular words spoken, or speeches made, or actual deeds done, but respond and acting in love from the heart of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit to honor God’s truth.

Our C.A.R.E spotlight for December is Charles (Chuck) Scherer, a faithful and loyal parishioner at St. Michael’s. Chuck’s personal gift to God clearly flows out of God’s gift to him from the love of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit in every aspect of his personal worship experience at St. Michaels. What is his personal gift to God? Chuck simply loves his Church, unconditionally and shares that message with everyone he meetsnot because of the historic building, not because of the special programs, the wonderful music, or even the great sermons that come from our clergy; Chuck is Spirit filled because of his Spirit-filled Church.

Chuck’s story is all about the “E” or Evangelism part of our acronym C.A.R.E. His story is about how God blesses and uses the truly faithful for His Kingdom work to share and sow the seeds of the Gospel in a very personal way as you will note from this special story.

For those of you who may not have met Chuck, he lives downtown at the Canterbury House. My wife and I along with a number of other members of our St. Michael’s CARE team provide Chuck a ride to and from Church every Sunday. He faithfully attends both the 9:00 am family service and Bill Hyer’s Sunday school class at 10:00 am. Chuck is always sitting out front anxiously awaiting in front of the Canterbury House for our arrival. I can’t prove that he is dressed and ready 30 minutes early every time, but I once pulled up to the front of the Canterbury House much earlier than expected and there was Chuck at 8:00 am dressed and waiting to go to Church for his 8:30 am pickup.

Anyone who knows Chuck or has been around him for any length of time will tell you, “Chuck really loves his Church.”  I have often thought, what an amazing personal gift to God. God has honored Chuck’s gift of faithfulness by pouring into him a deep Spirit of love for Jesus and a special adoration for his time of worship on Sunday. It only takes a brief encounter and discussion with Chuck about his favorite subject to light up the darkest of places in one’s heart. His warm and radiant smile says it all.

AN UNEXPECTED CONFIRMATION

A few weeks ago, Chuck was hospitalized for a serious condition, and later was transferred to Oak Harbor, a rehabilitation and Health Center in Mt. Pleasant. I went to visit Chuck and since he was going to be the subject of our CARE Newsletter Spotlight, I wanted him to not only approve what I had written about him, I wanted to hear his answer to the lead question of this CARE Newsletter: What is your personal gift to God?  So, I asked him. Chuck gave the question considerable thought and said, “It is to share the love of God with our Congregation”.  With this one 11 word answer, God confirmed the presence of the Holy Spirit and the transformation that I and many others at St. Michael’s had observed through Chuck’s faithful worship and attendance.

Chuck Scherer is an unusually bright light in St. Michael’s at a dark time in our world and in churches today. God uses Chuck in a powerful way to point St. Michael’s Congregation to Jesus through his simple and unconditional love for his Church.

Chuck would consider it a blessing to receive a card of thanksgiving, healing and encouragement from his beloved church family. Should you fill moved to do so, please mail your card to:
