8 Good Reasons to Shop Local
Whether shopping for holiday décor or gifts, or just for everyday goods and services, it’s often tempting to cozy up with our phones and laptops late at night to place an online order. But here are 8 vital reasons why shopping local makes more sense:
1. Keep your money in our local economy: For every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $73 remains in the local economy. At a non-locally owned business, only $43 stays in our community. And when you shop online? Even less stays local.
2. Create local jobs: When you shop and source services locally, not only do you support the businesses’ employees, your tax dollars help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions.
3. Help the environment: Buying from a locally-owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging.
4. Nurture community: Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at 250% the rate of chains.
5. Create more choice: Locally-owned businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets.
6. Leverage local expertise: Locally-owned businesses have a vested interest in serving you, their neighbor, with extra care.
7. Invest in entrepreneurship: Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon, especially so here in Humboldt County. Nurturing local businesses ensures a stronger economy.
8. Foster your own well-being: Shopping from your couch doesn’t give you “that holiday feeling” like shopping local does.
Join us in shopping local this holiday season—it makes good sense!
With gratitude,
Nancy
