"Images and Labels"

Hello Chapel Family!

This week, we explore an interesting story of two sisters, Mary and Martha, who are hosting Jesus in their home (Luke 10:38-42). Each of these two women is engaged in something important. However, Jesus shows them that one of the sisters has made a poor choice. Why? As I read the story today, it's confusing. Two thousand years ago, it was even more difficult to understand.

Martha, the elder sister, makes a small mistake, resulting in Martha receiving an unpopular label that has stood for generations.  Mary, her sister, makes a good decision and she has been enjoying the opposite label during that same time.   I don't think this is fair. One mistake (big or small) shouldn't label someone for life.  I mean, really, do labels matter? Why should any of us care what kind of image we portray as people, church, or community? 

Because in reality, we know those labels and images are important.  Yet, even when we are trying to portray a positive image, we can make mistakes. Then, even our best intentions become worthless as the world only remembers us by our mistaken labels and images.   This just ain't fair, is it?

This week during worship, we will explore this beautiful, first-century story.  Evidently, it is a big deal or we wouldn't still be scratching our heads about it, 2,000 years later.
