THE CHAPELINE - June 21, 2022

From Rev. Brock Patterson

"The Horse and Cart"

I became a pastor before I attended seminary. That sounds strange, doesn't it? One would think that folks need to be educated before accepting leadership in a local church. However, throughout the generations of humankind, the (worldwide) Church has primarily viewed the "Pastor" as the horse that pulls the cart. In this analogy, seminary (and life-long learning) is more like the cart. Without the horse to pull it, the cart is nothing more than a large storage tote full of books.

I know this is rather dense for a chapel newsletter. However, it paints an important reminder: We need not be formally educated or trained in order to serve God or even to help lead others when God urges us forward. Many of God's most effective leaders had (or have) little formal training.  Instead, they had (and have) at least one important quality:  Determined commitments to God and God's work.

No matter where we are in life, all of us can be leaders for God. Sure, all of us should try to learn more about what we are doing, but the learning need not come before we take a step forward. God has already supplied us with what we need to move forward and the LORD will provide the rest when we need it.

Each of us still has a purpose. Each of us still makes a difference. Each of us still has great value and we are "far from finished" in this life. Let's consider giving God a chance with the time we have. With God's help, pulling the cart ain't that hard!

God Bless. Brock
