THE CHAPELINE - May 31, 2022

FROM Rev. Brock Patterson

"Broken Boxes"

Oh, the shameful things that some people do! Over the Memorial Day weekend, our donation boxes in the Chapel Garden were vandalized. One box was pried open from the top and the other was stolen completely. We probably lost no more than $50, but the crime causes pain to many people, including the wonderful man who built the boxes for us. It's terrible. It's shameful. We will pray for them and allow God to issue the appropriate justice.

Back in the old days, churches and chapels were considered to be sacred, even among criminals. Then, about twenty years ago, thieves began to target church music equipment.  Then, about ten years ago, copper prices soared and thieves began scavenging copper wire from air conditioners, refrigerators, and other appliances at churches.

Even when security measures are in place, churches and chapels are easy targets. Why? Because we rarely fight back. We tend to look the other way on things and offer our prayers for offenders, rather than use captured video surveillance to prosecute them.

Believe it or not, this same issue (not fighting back) is at the heart of why we choose to blame churches and chapels for all kinds of things. Subconsciously, we target the church because we need a reason to justify our hurts and pains.

One of the primary goals at the Chapel is to create a safe space for everyone. We want people to feel comfortable, relieved, and encouraged. It doesn't mean that we're perfect or that we have the remedy for every problem.  Instead, it means the opposite. The Chapel is full of imperfect people who are trying their best to follow God. If that means we need to sometimes look the other way regarding a problem, then okay.

Ultimately, God is the only one that we should be trying to please. Just because someone else causes us pain, it doesn't mean we have to return the favor.  In this instance, our prayers will carry more weight than a police report. The person who stole those few dollars needed it more than the Chapel.  May God Bless the guilty parties so that they don't need to break any more boxes to fill their needs.

Stay safe and healthy, Chapel family! Remember to pray for all people who are in need!

God Bless, Brock.

Shifting Sands

Next Meeting June 2

Shifting Sands will meet this Thursday, June 2nd at the Chapel at 10:00 a.m.

Pearls of Wisdom from Shifting Sands:

“My trust in God flows out of the experience of his loving me, day in and day out, whether the day is stormy or fair, whether I'm sick or in good health, whether I'm in a state of grace or disgrace. He comes to me where I live and loves me as I am.

― Brennan Manning, author and public speaker

SOCIAL HOUR to benefit the Charitable Outreach’s, "OH BABY!" collection.

Please join us for a Social Hour on Thursday, June 2nd from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in Shook Fellowship Hall. All are welcome!

Please bring:

·       Your own beverage (BYOB)

·       An appetizer to share

·       Most importantly, a item for the OH BABY! Collection (suggested items are listed below)

The Charitable Outreach Committee is collecting baby items including onesies, booties, toys, blankets, diapers, wipes, etc. All items will be donated to the Cyesis Program at Riverview High School in Sarasota. The goal of this program is to encourage teen parents to continue on the path toward receiving a high school diploma by providing daycare services for their children. We hope you will find it in your heart to donate.

If you are not able to attend, items can be dropped off at the donation station in the Narthex.

The Reverend Charlie Shook has recently published another book, entitled To Tell the Story.  This book is a collection of some of his favorite stories. Some come from famed authors like A.A. Milne or Mark Twain. Others are from ordinary people who have spun extraordinary tales. They are all included to take us captive and make us more human.

After the service, Reverend Shook will be available with signed copies of the book for purchase.

Renovation Project Survey

The Board of Trustees would like your assistance in providing feedback and thoughts you may have about making our Chapel bathrooms and entrance more inviting and welcoming. An explanatory letter and survey form have been mailed to members. Additional copies for Chapel friends are available on the table in Shook Fellowship Hall. The Board requests that completed survey forms be returned by June 25, 2022. Thank you for your participation…the information you provide will be invaluable throughout the renovation process.

The following books were suggested by members of the Chapel Book Club. We hope you enjoy them.  The Book Club will meet again on October 10.  We will be discussing Sooley by John Grisham.
