“Counting the Blessings!”
June is closing and July begins. The days used to creep by slowly, but now, the days move so quickly that it’s barely noticeable…It seems like only yesterday…I was a young professional beginning a career. I closed my eyes and imagined myself at fifty years old. I awakened this morning and discovered that I’m already beyond fifty years old, and now, I’m wondering what life will be like when I’m sixty. This time, however, I dare not close my eyes, lest I wake up tomorrow wondering about life in my seventies.
Am I complaining? Yes, but I shouldn’t. I know it’s a blessing to count each day, but rarely do I think about it that way. Unfortunately, I don’t usually count my blessings. Deep in my heart and mind, I know that each step I take, Mountain Dew that I drink, and tap on my keyboard is a blessing. Though I experience them each day, I don’t go so far as to thank God for my legs that work, drink that I enjoy, or keyboard that helps to pay for my room and board.
We take for granted many wonderful things that we experience each day, and in doing so, we forget about them. Then, as we turn on our televisions, reboot our computers, or browse our phone notifications, the stuff we see is either bad, shocking, or both. The result is that our mind is clouded by unhealthy imagery.
As I take a moment to think about all this, I’m discovering that the bad stuff I’m absorbing is a direct result of where I choose to focus my attention. If I spent more time focused on my blessings, then I might see that the world isn’t half as bad as I thought. In fact, I might find that my world has more potential than ever, because I’m recognizing a better way to live!
Today, I’ll count my blessings because God is so Good to me! I’ll see you at the Chapel!
God Bless. Brock
