City Council Reorganizes, Selects New Mayor
|
|
At its annual reorganization meeting, the Concord City Council selected Vice Mayor Dominic Aliano to serve as the City's new Mayor and Councilmember Laura Hoffmeister to serve as Vice Mayor, effective Dec. 7, 2021.
Aliano, Hoffmeister, and Councilmembers Edi Birsan and Carlyn Obringer thanked outgoing Mayor Tim McGallian for his two years of service as mayor.
A Concord native, Aliano was first elected to the Council in November 2018. He previously served on the Board of Directors for three local non-profits: the Monument Crisis Center, Support4Recovery, and the Todos Santos Business Association. Aliano also served on the Concord Planning Commission from 2016 to 2018 and served as the chair in 2018.
Hoffmeister was first elected to the Concord City Council in 1997 and was subsequently reelected five times. She served as Mayor in 2001, 2005, 2009, 2011, and 2016-2017.
During the meeting, McGallian recognized Raymond Barbour, Christa Fairfield, and Dominic Machi with the Mayor’s 2021 Community Service Award.

Concord Hires New Public Works Director

|
Concord City Manager Valerie Barone announced that William “Will” Tarbox has been hired to serve as the City’s Public Works Director. His first day will be Dec. 13.
As Concord’s Public Works Director, Mr. Tarbox will be in charge of the City’s infrastructure maintenance responsibilities (roads, trees, buildings, medians, sewer, storm water, parks), overseeing a team of 75 skilled employees.
“With extensive experience in both the private and public sectors, Will brings strong leadership skills, broad expertise, and a commitment to strengthening Concord’s Public Works Department,” Barone said.
Tarbox (pronounced “Tar-bo”) recently served as the Public Works Director for the City of Benicia, where he managed five divisions including a Maintenance Division (Streets, Fleet, Water Distribution, Collections, Traffic), Administration, Engineering, and two Utility Enterprise Divisions (Water and Wastewater). Prior to Benicia, Will worked for the City and County of San Francisco for 12 years as Superintendent of the Structural Maintenance & Infrastructure Division in the Recreation & Parks Department.

Shop Concord Gift Card Program Returns for the Holidays
|
|
The City of Concord and the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce have relaunched the highly successful Shop Concord program to support the city’s small businesses by encouraging residents to shop locally this holiday season. The Shop Concord program will support and increase sales for local businesses while also providing a boost to the local economy.
The e-gift cards can be purchased on the City of Concord’s Yiftee page. The City of Concord’s Yiftee page also includes a list of participating merchants. The value of the cards purchased can be redeemed at any participating Concord business.

Pine Hollow Complete Streets Survey Closes Dec. 10
|
|
The City of Concord, in partnership with the City of Clayton, is examining transportation challenges along the Pine Hollow Road/Alberta Way corridor between Clayton Valley Charter High School and Mt. Diablo Elementary School, and developing preliminary improvement concepts to enhance safety, bicycle and pedestrian circulation, and residential and school access.
Community members interested in this project are being asked to take this survey. Please take 5-10 minutes to provide feedback on the potential roadway improvements being considered.
If you missed us at the virtual community workshop earlier this month, the presentation and additional supporting information is available on the project website.
The survey deadline is Friday, December 10!

Vacation House Check Program is Back
|
|
Concord has relaunched its Vacation House Check Program, which is now available to all Concord residents free of charge.
Vacation house checks include a perimeter check, physical and/or visual check of all doors and windows, verification of vehicles left on the property, and verification of any people found on the property. Trained volunteers will perform a thorough inspection of your property at least once per week while you are away, paying close attention to the details provided by you on the online Vacation House Check Request Form.
Vacation House Check requests must be submitted online at least 48 hours prior to your departure date and cannot be requested for longer than 60 days.

City Seeks Youth Members for Parks Commission
|
|
Do you know a Concord youth (ages 13-21) who likes to implement change? Is interested in activities and parks in Concord? Wants to get involved in their community?
The City of Concord is currently seeking youth members for its Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Commission (PROSC). There are two youth member positions available, and the City is now accepting applications from students ages 13-21.
The PROSC advises the City Council on matters related to public parks, open space, recreation, and youth; reviews and recommends Council action to develop, modify, and/or improve City parks; promotes recreation and park programs; assesses park and recreation needs; and recommends capital improvement projects and fees.
