LEAF MULCHING

Leaves are a great source of compost and nutrients for your lawn and gardens. Use your mulching mower on your lawn when the leaves start to fall. These finely chopped bits of leaves bring worms to the surface to feed. This aerates the lawn as well as adding worm castings to your soil (all good stuff!). You do not want to smother the lawn in leaf mulch. Frequently cutting and mulching your lawn will prevent this. If it seems like there is too much mulch on the grass, mulch the lawn with the bag on and add the mulched leaves to your gardens and flower beds. Click here to learn more about mulching leaves.

SHADE TREE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

BLACK GUM

Scientific Name:

 Nyssa sylvatica

Botanic Family:   Cornaceae/Dogwood

Height:  50’ - 70’

Black Gum - also known as Black Tupelo and Sour Gum, is a medium to large sized Ohio native tree often found on moist soils throughout the eastern United States.

Black Gum trees develop a tall straight trunk, have dense foliage with a conical crown, making it an excellent shade and ornamental tree when

planted in a large landscape or park setting.

Alternate 3” - 5” long leaves are simple in form and oblong to obovate in shape - often found at the tips of the branches. Black Gums unique, deeply furrowed ridged bark can resemble alligator hide. Black Gum flowers appear in late spring and are important for bees and honey

production. It produces small dark blue berry-like fruit in the fall that is a beneficial food source for wildlife.

One of the first trees to change its color and put on a spectacular fall show - easily recognized by its head turning, brilliant bright red, orange, crimson and purple leaves.

BITS AND PIECES OF FAIRVIEW PARK HISTORY

OUR FIRST "CHAIN" GROCERY STORE

Tracing Fairview Park History, Chris H. Gerrett

In 1928, Fairview Village had five independently owned (mom & pop) local grocery stores operating along Lorain Road.

In the center of town, known as Spencers' Corners (West 220 Street & Lorain Road), was the location of the City's first chain grocery store, Fisher Bros. Grocery.  There slogan was "It's Fresher at Fisher's." Fisher's was located in the 2-story brick 'Spencer' building and was the only store in the village where Dairymen's Milk could be purchased.

Three years later, in 1931, Kroger's Grocery Store, another chain grocery store, set up shop in our village. Kroger's not only moved into the village and opened a storefront but did so on the same side of the street and about 2 blocks west of the Fisher Bros. grocery store.

This neighborly arrangement between the two chain grocery stores continued even after they both moved into the new shopping center many years later and once again were neighbors. Just an arm's length away.

Over the years, the mom & pop grocery stores either closed or focused on becoming a delicatessen. A few became every kid's favorite, a 'corner store' where penny candy was always available just for returning a soda bottle.
