JUNE 2025
CITY OF FAIRVIEW PARK
MAIN STREET CONNECTION
| | |
Greetings!
School, for all of Fairview Park, will be out June 4th. Expect to see children out and about during the weekdays, teens congregating, and much more business at our many ice cream shops.
We have much going on in Fairview Park this year:
- Construction should be wrapping up for the Enbridge gas project we've all been tolerating.
- The Gemini natatorium is undergoing concrete removal.
- Bids are out for the Woodstock Avenue sewer replacement, and we expect to get started very soon.
- Haber Drive is due to be repaved this summer.
- The cemetery received a much-needed repaving of the front walkway and had several dangerous dead or damaged trees removed just in time for the Memorial Day crowds.
- The City finally received delivery of a new street sweeper which should help remove gravel from the roadbeds much more efficiently than our old machine.
- We have two sewer vacuum trucks out in the City, cleaning out lines, identifying collapses, and removing tree balls.
- Last month we received delivery of a rehabbed sewer CCTV truck which will reduce costs and increase our investigative reach.
We are making progress. Real, much needed, long-term progress.

The City of Fairview is excited to have a new street sweeper truck and thought it would be fun to give the truck a name. We are looking for name suggestions. The last day to submit your idea is Monday, June 30 2025.

The Heritage Home Program (HHP), a program of the Cleveland Restoration Society, is operating in Fairview Park. The HHP offers guidance and low-cost financing, with interest as low as 2%, to homeowners for home improvements and maintenance projects. While there are some restrictions on qualifying projects, homeowners can use the loans for many projects, such as basement waterproofing. Please see the program website for details.
There are additional programs already available for low cost financing through the County, such as the Housing Enhancement Loan Program (HELP). Eligible properties must have a property tax value under $250,000 to qualify. Please visit their website for details.

- replacement of the sanitary sewers and connections
- replacement of the storm sewer and connections
- replacement of the water main and connections

The Project has an engineer’s estimated cost of $5,521,080.00. Design work by the City’s consulting engineer is 95% complete. The City is waiting for final review from the Ohio EPA and the City of Cleveland Water Department. The estimated start for construction is late summer. Residents will receive information prior to construction. Any detour information will be marked appropriately on the roadways and posted on the City's website.

The Fire Department is in the process of the annual inspection and flushing of the fire hydrants in the City. Watch for the signs posted in your area. Weather permitting, the Fire Department should be finished by June 6.
Hydrant flushing can, and usually does, cause a temporary condition of rusty water. All residents are cautioned to check their water supply, especially before washing clothes or filling a pool. If you have a rusty water supply, run your cold-water faucets until the condition clears.

SHADE TREE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
| | FAIRVIEW PARK'S MOST VALUED TREE AWARDS | | |
Do you love our community’s trees? Join the City of Fairview Park and the Shade Tree Advisory Committee to celebrate the trees that make up our city’s urban forest by nominating a tree for Fairview Park’s Most Valued Tree (MVT).
What is a Most Valued Tree?
A Most Valued Tree (MVT) isn’t necessarily your neighborhood's largest, tallest, or oldest. It is a tree that is special to you and maybe the owner as well. Perhaps you appreciate the beauty of the tree, the shade it provides for your home or on your walk through the neighborhood, the birds and other wildlife that the tree harbors, or it was planted in celebration or memory of someone special. Whatever makes that tree valuable to you, we would like to share and celebrate it!
To nominate a Most Valued Tree simply fill out the online form at Fairview Park Most Valued Tree Award by June 30.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Shade Tree Advisory Committee at stac@fairviewpark.org.
On behalf of the City and the Shade Tree Advisory Committee, thank you for making our community just a little more special and a great place to live!
| | SHADE TREE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETINGS | | The Shade Tree Advisory Committee holds public meetings on the second Thursday of every month. Please join us in the Dunson Room at City Hall for the next meeting Thursday, June 12 at 6:00 P.M. | | BITS AND PIECES OF FAIRVIEW PARK HISTORY | | |
CENTER RIDGE ROAD
~Split down the middle, why?~
Tracing Fairview Park History, Chris H. Gerrett
The boundary between Fairview Park and Rocky River is now in the middle of Center Ridge Road, but this was not always the case. Originally, the boundary was one foot within the sidewalk on the Fairview Park side of Center Ridge Road.
By the late 1940s, many businesses had been established on the Rocky River side of Center Ridge Road; only a handful were on the Fairview Village side. But that would change; in 1950, the Village of Fairview Park council approved the rezoning of land at the corner of Center Ridge Road and West 210 Street for a shopping center, now known as Westgate. This plan raised concerns about increased traffic on Center Ridge Road, which was maintained solely by the City of Rocky River.
Since property owners on the Fairview Park side of Center Ridge Road did not contribute any tax money to Rocky River to cover the cost of road maintenance, Fairview Park agreed to relocate the boundary to the center of Center Ridge Road, creating shared maintenance costs between the two communities.
Shortly after the boundary was adjusted, Westgate stores began opening, which, as expected, increased traffic on Center Ridge Road.

NATURAL WAYS TO BATTLE WEEDS
Battling weeds in your yard and concrete and you don’t want to put poison into the ground? Here are some natural ways to battle weeds:
- Boiling water – pour boiling water over the weeds; make sure you pour the water only over the weeds desired to be eliminated and not over any other plants.
- Soap – mix 5 tbsp dish soap with 4 c water in a spray bottle; coat the weeds with the soapy water; this works best on hot days.
- Vinegar solution – equal parts of vinegar, salt, and dish soap; spray only on weeds as it will kill whatever plant it touches.
- Alcohol solution – mix 1 oz vodka, 2 c water, 2 drops of dish soap in spray bottle and spray on weeds.
- Salt – apply a pinch at base of plant. Salt will kill weeds but also renders the soil uninhabitable for several months so is not recommended. It Is best used between pavers or on driveways.
- Pasta or potato water – pour water used to boil pasta or potatoes over desired area, the starch in the water kills the weeds.
- Mulch – is desirable to use between plants in a vegetable or flower garden.
-
Newspaper or cardboard – works well in large areas filled with weeds.
