MESSAGE FROM MAYOR COONEY

Hello Kathleen,

Once again, we had a beautiful Summerfest weekend! Thank you to all the vendors, local organizations, volunteers, and city workers for all that you did to make this such a great event. A very special thanks to the Summerfest Committee and its volunteers for another wonderful weekend of family fun in Fairview Park. This dedicated group does such a great job of showcasing our community. Bravo on a job well done! Looking forward to seeing everyone at next year’s Summerfest!

Prior to the showing there will be other fun family activities to enjoy. Hope to see you there!

WASTE COLLECTION

SCHEDULE, SERVICE GUIDE, AND UPDATES

To view the 2022 schedule for rubbish, recycling, bulk item, yard waste, leaf, and special recycling collections, click here.

Click here for the Trash, Yard Waste, Recycling and Bulk Waste Service Guide provided by Republic Services.

WASTE COLLECTION SERVICE UPDATES

Appliances containing Freon cannot be accepted by Republic Services in bulk refuse collection. Before Republic Services can remove an item with Freon, a hazardous material that cannot be landfilled, the Freon must be removed from appliances (refrigerators) and the item must be tagged with information about the Freon removal from a qualified company. Using the company delivering your new appliance is an economic option for removal of unwanted equipment containing Freon.

House rehabilitation debris cannot be accepted by Republic Services. All bulk waste must be bundled or cut into 4’ lengths so Republic Services' personnel are able to ‘grab, throw and go’. Please note, bulk waste is collected by one person per truck and items over 45 pounds cannot be collected.

Placing excessive construction waste on the tree lawn for bulk collection limits hauling efficacy and can cause trucks to fill prematurely leading to route collection delays. Temporary waste dumpsters must be secured for construction / large home rehabilitation project waste. These devices can be easily ordered and delivered to residences (please do not block the sidewalk with temporary waste dumpsters). Thank you for doing your part in helping minimize delays and costs in our refuse collection process.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

School will be back in session in a few weeks. Please do your part to keep our students safe this year.

  • Slow down and drive extra cautiously in the area of schools.
  • Please obey all traffic control devices (20 MPH signs, No Turn on Red, etc.).
  • Please obey directions from the crossing guards - their sole purpose is to help get our children to and from school safely.
  • Always stop for a crossing guard holding up a stop sign.
  • Be patient around the schools - please remember everyone needs to work together for safety.
  • Do not double park; it blocks visibility for other children and vehicles.
  • When flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection.
  • Do not block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic.
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.
  • Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you are on an undivided single lane road – if it is stopped to load or unload children. It is dangerous for the students and against the law.
  • If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended on a school bus, traffic must stop.
  • The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus.
  • Be alert; children often are unpredictable, and they tend to ignore hazards and take risks.

If you see a hazard, please call and report it to 440-333-1234.

BITS AND PIECES OF FAIRVIEW PARK HISTORY

History of Coe Creek

Tracing Fairview Park History, Chris H. Gerrett

The village, and later the City, referred to Coe Creek as Coe Ditch. By 1998, the term Ditch had a negative connotation, and it was officially renamed Coe Creek a few years later.

What's behind the name?

As early as the 1800s, the creek's starting point was on Andrew Coe's property (in what is now known as North Olmsted). The Coe property was not just land. The property was a working farm with horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, poultry, wagons, carriages, carts, plows, sleds, and storage buildings with drainage at the back of the property. As time marched on, the drainage turned into a creek that was not very deep nor very wide but found its way into what is today Fairview Park.

The most enjoyable section of the creek and open to the public is the stream that runs through the Bain Park area. It adds to the charm of the park, trails, playground, shelter house, pavilion, and the community cabin, Bain Cabin.  Take a hike or a stroll; when you get to the parking lot of the cabin, step back in time, and envision that area as a small lake that was formed by the wide turn of the creek as it continued to make its way to the Rocky River.
