Lake Elmo's Jesuit Retreat House
The Jesuit Retreat House is located in Lake Elmo on DeMontreville Trail North. It is a Catholic retreat center on the shores of Lake DeMontreville. More than 3,000 men participate each year in the silent weekend retreats that help participants to grow in Christian values.

Originally known as "Glen Iris," this property was named after the many beautiful irises growing along the water's edge. It was built over the period from 1917 to 1924, by Michael Waldorf, owner of Waldorf Paper Company in St. Paul.

A St. Paul Pioneer Press article in August 1926 praises Glen Iris:

"Glen Iris is one of the noted beauty spots of the Northwest, and the country home of M. W. Waldorf of St. Paul. The estate, which comprises 107 acres, fronts the northeast shoreline of Lake DeMontreville for a distance of more than a mile. Ten years ago lay a farm that, because of its rolling land, was only partly cultivated. It now is one of nature's wonderlands."

After Waldorf died, the estate was sold to the Jesuit Catholic order and made into a Retreat House.

When the Jesuits purchased the property, they made many improvements to the buildings and grounds. Today, visitors enjoy restored fountains and retaining walls with well-maintained trees and shrubs. Ninety-eight percent of the flowers on the property have been grown from seed in their own greenhouse. "Glen Iris is not just a lingering memory," Father Edward Sthokal says, "It lives on in today's DeMontreviIle and continues to impact the area by contributing to the peace, beauty and serenity of the entire neighborhood."
