Learn | Pray | Act | Advocate... for all Creation

Welcome to the Season of Creation

The Season of Creation is upon us, and it is a perfect time to focus on God's creation through worship, education, action and advocacy. If you aren't sure that your congregation is ready to form a creation care team at the church, take this opportunity to open the discussion, joining with faith communities around the world as we acknowledge and celebrate our interconnectedness with all that God has created.

Several of our parishes have big plans for the Season, which we are sharing below as inspiration for others. Please take a look at the robust worship resource approved for use in our diocese for the Season of Creation. Churches in Alabama are invited to participate in the solar advocacy opportunity developed by Gulf Coast Creation Care to promote solar energy in the state. Ask around in your congregation for people who work in environmental jobs and ask them to speak to members about what they do. Research has shown that many more people are concerned about our common home than we realize, so this topic could be a good one for rallying members around a common ministry.

Season of Creation Around the Diocese

See flyers above for examples of Season of Creation month-long programming from St. Christopher's, Pensacola and Redeemer, Mobile. All Saints, Mobile is planning a day of celebration on September 21 and inviting everyone to a Sunset Service on the Feast of St. Francis, October 1.

We want to let everyone know how folks are celebrating the Season around the Diocese. Please send us your stories and your pictures!

Advocacy - A Discipleship of Climate Action

Sun Day is a national day of action celebrating the power of clean energy. Gulf Coast Creation Care is inviting churches in Alabama to host a postcard writing campaign on Sunday, September 21, asking our elected representatives at the Alabama Public Service Commission to update regulations to encourage, rather than deter, solar power in Alabama.

They have created postcards to make this campaign easy to conduct. Email them to receive a stack of postcards to use with for your congregation. They suggest that you host this as an intergenerational event by asking kids (of all ages) to complete the campaign sun logo on one side, using crayons, colored pencils, markers, etc. Then ask adults to write a short message to our elected public service commissioners, using the prompts provided on this document. The postcards require postage, which you can ask members to supply, or collect the postcards and mail them from the church.

Alabama enjoys an abundance of sunshine, but zero incentive to capture that free energy by installing solar panels, due to a 2013 decision by the PSC to allow the state’s largest energy monopoly to charge a tax on sunshine. As a result, only 1% of the power generated in sunny Alabama is from solar.

Companies are looking for access to renewable energy. Residents want to be able to buy clean energy. Meanwhile, Alabama is missing all of the economic opportunities offered by renewable energy…economic growth, jobs, low-cost electricity, energy independence and price stability. Renewables are good for our economy and good for our health. Join solar advocates across the state in this call for a sun-powered Alabama!

What We Have Been Watching

Feast of Creation

Since the 5th century, the Eastern Church has marked September 1 as the beginning of the year, celebrating “the day of Creation”, when God began the creation of the universe. But in the Western churches, the Christian year has begun with Advent and the beginning of the story of the Incarnation. Now there is an ecumenical movement across the western churches to establish a “Feast Day of the Mystery of Creation” on September 1st to the western liturgical calendars.

Watch this webinar to learn about the history of this effort, its implications for preaching and worship, and its current status across the churches.

The Rev. Jerry Cappel is an Episcopal Priest in Kentucky and serves as the Director for the Center for Deep Green Faith and coordinator for the Episcopal Province IV Environmental Network.
