Cross Currents
November 2018
A Message from the Director
All -

This rain sure has been tough on our projects and events! But don't let that deter you from joining us for the great ones we still have on-deck for these last few months of 2018.

Early November is a great time to join the Conservancy. We have a few tree plantings still lined up for the Perkiomen Plant-A-Thon. On November 15th, we have our monthly Preschool Science Program... this month's topic is Fish Tales! On November 17th, we're heading down to Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge with the Wyncote Aububon Society to catch the last migrants heading south. On Sunday, December 2, don't miss the first ever Freeze-Up 5k at Free Will Brewing in Perkasie! All runners and walkers get a t-shirt, a free beer and all the fun they can handle! On Saturday, December 8th we'll be hosting a wine-bottle bird feeder building workshop... a great way to recycle and help our little feathered friends through the winter!

Looking towards the new year, please join us for the Pennsylvania Master Naturalist Program held at the Conservancy. This is a great way to learn more about our local environment and how to protect it. Also, we're actively recruiting for our next youth program participants. If you know of a high school student who loves the outdoors, tell them to check out the Perkiomen Watershed Conservation Corps. Finally, for our municipalities, your 2019 MS4 Memberships are due. See the link below!

Thanks, and I certainly hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

Winter is just a few weeks away...
Are you ready for the snow, the cold and the long dark days?
Neither are we!

So join us on Sunday, December 2nd for the Freeze-Up 5K at Free Will Brewing and make the most of the last few days of Fall!
The Freeze-Up 5K begins and ends at Free Will Brewing Company in Perkasie, PA. Join us for this unique 5K run or walk on the scenic trails in and around Perkasie and along the East Branch of the Perkiomen Creek. The Freeze-Up is open to runners and walkers of all ages, but you must be 21 or older (with ID) to get your free craft brew from Free Will. Runners and walkers also get a long sleeve tee with their registration. The awards are custom designed pint glasses and are presented to the top three finishers in each
respective age/gender category.

Come out to support our runners and walkers and you just might have some fun yourself. Surely you'll enjoy the refreshments!

We have two great Preschool Adventures coming up that
you won't want to miss!
On November 15, join us for Fish Tales
One of the oldest families of animals on earth, the fish were here long before the dinosaurs! Always found in water, salt or fresh, their movements and adaptations fascinate everyone. Join us in taking a playful journey into their underwater world.
And on December 13, it's Animals... How & Where Do They Sleep?
All animals need to sleep, but they all do it a little differently! Some animals sleep at night while others are up and awake! An interesting look into the definition of sleep and how different animals accomplish it.
Watershed Wide
January through June 2019
The Conservancy is currently recruiting members for the 2019 Perkiomen Watershed Conservation Corps. This youth program, designed specifically for high school students, blends hands-on experiential learning with meaningful environmental service. If you or a youth you know loves to be outdoors or is thinking of heading into an environmental career, then sign up for this program!

The Conservation Corps youth program  begins in January 2019 and runs through the end of June . Early in the program, participants will learn the fundamentals of watershed management while developing their conservation field skills. Throughout the spring, participants work hand-in-hand with our staff conservationists as they complete a wide variety of projects and programs. In June, participants will venture out on an epic five-day paddling expedition that begins along the Perkiomen Creek and finishes on the Delaware River.

March thru June 2019
The Watershed is happy to host The Pennsylvania Master Naturalist (PMN) program once again next year. The program combines a total of 55 hours of classroom and field instruction, preparing volunteers to provide education, outreach and service dedicated to the conservation of natural resources and natural areas within their communities.

The Spring 2019 course begins at the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy in mid-March and will continue weekly with Wednesday evening classroom sessions and several Saturday field sessions through June. In addition to the 55 hours of core training, participants are expected to complete 30 hours of approved volunteer service and 8 hours of advanced training or continuing education within their first year in the program. Annual requirements for subsequent years include 20 hours of volunteer service and 12 hours of advanced training or continuing education.
Held this year on Thursday, October 18th at RiverCrest Golf Club and Preserve , our largest fundraiser of the year was a grand success! We are truly grateful for the generous support of all of our guests, donors and sponsors.

Again, congratulations to our 2018 Environmental Award Recipients!
