New Student Trustee Begins Yearlong Term

Diablo Valley College student Nicholas Bonasera was sworn in on June 10 as the new Student Trustee for the Contra Costa Community College District Governing Board.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran and President of the Student Veterans Alliance, Nick brings a strong background in leadership, advocacy, and service. He is passionate about expanding educational access, strengthening student support, and ensuring every student voice is heard across the District.

Nick, who was elected to the Student Trustee position by students at all three colleges, is committed to representing all students and fostering meaningful, student-centered leadership.

Free Tuition Offered to Full-Time Students

Did you know that the Contra Costa Community College District offers a Full-Time Free Tuition Program? Eligible students can receive up to two academic years of free tuition at Contra Costa College, Diablo Valley College, or Los Medanos College.

Students may qualify by:

• Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application 
• Enrolling in at least 12 units each term
• Meeting California residency or AB540 eligibility requirements
• Accepting the award through 4CD's InSite portal

The program applies to Fall and Spring academic terms for eligible full-time students.

DVC Students Invent Cheer Horn for World Cup

To celebrate the kickoff of World Cup 2026, students at Diablo Valley College partnered with tourism organization Visit Pleasant Hill to unveil "The Pleasant Horn," a student-designed, student-built horn that is a local interpretation of the iconic vuvuzela. This project, which highlights experiential learning, was created by members of DVC's National Society of Black Engineers and the Architecture, Construction and Engineering Club.

Student leader Ayomi Ikutiminu helped guide the effort, connecting engineering students with a real community project. Through design, prototyping, and collaboration, students built a functional symbol of celebration and welcome.

Kennedy-King Scholars Celebrated

Congratulations to the 27 undergraduate students and eight graduate students who were recently honored at the 58th annual Kennedy-King Memorial College Scholarship Fund Awards ceremony.

With family and friends surrounding them, proud recipients shared their educational aspirations made possible through their scholarship awards.

Founded in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, the Kennedy-King Memorial Scholarship has granted nearly $7.7 million in scholarships to more than 1,385 students since 1968.

All scholars have completed at least two years of study at Contra Costa College, Diablo Valley College, or Los Medanos College, and have been accepted at a four-year university to complete their undergraduate studies. Scholarships for graduate students are for students who previously received a Kennedy-King undergraduate scholarship. 

Many of these high-achieving scholars have faced considerable adversity and persevered with determination.

DVC Accepts Board of Supervisors Resolution Honoring Inclusivity and Wellness Center, Community of Pride

Several representatives of Diablo Valley College, including DVC President Dr. Monica Chahal and 4CD Board President Diana Honig, attended the County Board of Supervisor's meeting on June 23 to receive a resolution presented by Supervisor Ken Carlson on behalf of the full Board.

At the meeting, the Board voted to adopt Resolution No. 2026-226 recognizing the collaboration of the Inclusivity and Wellness Center and the Community of Pride Learning Community at Diablo Valley College for their contributions to uplifting LGBTQIA+ students.

"Pride month is an opportunity to highlight the people and the programs that make our community more inclusive, more welcoming, and more supportive to the LGBTQIA+ community," said Supervisor Carlson, a graduate of Los Medanos College.

"When local leaders publicly recognize and celebrate Pride Month, it sends a powerful message that our students matter, that they are welcome here, and that their contributions strengthen our communities," said Theresa Hade, Senior Program Coordinator of DVC's Inclusivity and Wellness Center.

Contra Costa County Seeks Input on Emergency Alert System

Have you ever received an emergency alert about a wildfire, earthquake, refinery incident, evacuation, or other emergency?

Contra Costa County is asking residents and visitors to participate in a brief survey about emergency alerts, notification systems, and preparedness.

Survey results will help improve emergency communications and ensure people receive timely, accurate, and actionable information during emergencies.
