How to Talk to Children About Their Mental Health: An Age-by-Age Guide
Talking to your kids about their mental health can feel really challenging but parents should check in.

Gilles-Sweet
We're off to a great start at Gilles-Sweet! Just a reminder: Mrs. Schlesinger will be working with primarily kindergarten-2nd grade students this year. Mrs. Schulte will be working primarily with 3rd-5th grades. We're excited to have an opportunity to focus on specific grade levels and get to know our students and their families better!

PRIDE HOUSE:
Gilles-Sweet students participated in their first PRIDE House of the year this week! The Warrior PRIDE PBIS program provides students the opportunity to foster a sense of community and belonging.  Additionally, during PRIDE house lessons, students learn about school behavior expectations and other initiatives in our school; such as the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program, Start with Hello, Growth Mindset, and social and emotional learning topics.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR LESSONS AND TOPICS THROUGH DECEMBER:
In kindergarten and 1st grade the students will be learning about the role of a school counselor and then will be talking about comfortable and uncomfortable feelings and coping strategies as well as personal space and bullying. Second grade reviewed comfortable and uncomfortable feelings and coping strategies and will soon be talking about anxiety as well as bullying.

Third through 5th grades will be reviewing comfortable and uncomfortable feelings and coping strategies, a little about their brains work and how our brains respond to stress. In addition, students will be learning about friendship, bullying, and/or building empathy.

WAYS I CAN CALM MYSELF STRATEGIES:
Kindergarten-3rd grade:
4th-5th grades:
  • Take deep breaths
  • Count slowly
  • Walk away from the situation
  • Practice positive self-talk
  • Brain Break: take a lap, read, write or draw
  • Think nice thoughts or think about your calm spot

Additionally, in alignment with our new Conscious Discipline program, students will all be learning 4 new calming/breathing techniques: The S.T.A.R., pretzel, drain, and balloon. Please reinforce and practice these strategies at home!
