Reflecting on our Independence

Clara Reynolds
President & CEO
Amidst the fireworks and barbeques that typically surround the 4th of July, I found myself thinking about all the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom and independence.  While our national armed forces have provided us with the ability to commemorate this holiday, it is our veterans who deserve to be the focus of our national celebration!

Hillsborough County is home to over 95,000 veterans (www.va.gov).  Fortunately, most of our veterans have what they need to live healthy, happy and productive lives.  However, we have all heard statistics pertaining to veterans who are struggling.  Homelessness, addiction, suicidal ideation, and mental health conditions like PTSD, anxiety and depression plague way too many of our veteran heroes.

A Simple Phone Call Saves a Veteran's Life

It was 2:37 in the morning - a lonely hour.

Sam had attempted suicide before. Ten years earlier, his father had intervened and saved Sam's life.

Now, he was struggling again. He pondered his life and the potential consequences of his decision, and thought about leaving his fiancé and their unborn son alone. He reached for his cell phone.

The line rang at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay.  Ophelia, a Crisis Specialist, answered.

She got Sam talking.

SpeakUp 5k to Benefit the Crisis Center

As a teenager, Cameron Gallagher suffered from severe depression and anxiety and discovered that running made her feel better. For years Cameron dreamed of creating a 5k race in her community to help raise awareness about teenage depression.

Unfortunately, Cameron was only sixteen when she passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition as she crossed the finish line at a half marathon in Virginia Beach, VA in March of 2014.

The Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation was formed to fulfill Cameron's dream and legacy by being a positive force that works to cultivate awareness and understanding of teenage depression and anxiety. This year, the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay was selected as the beneficiary of the SpeakUp 5k race taking place on Saturday, October 22nd at Al Lopez Park in Tampa.

You can support Crisis Center programs that deal with teenage depression and anxiety by running (or walking) in the SpeakUp 5k!  To register as an individual or form a team, click HERE.

This year, Beer & Bow Ties will take place at The Ritz in Ybor City on Wednesday, August 31st starting at 7pm. Proceeds raised at Beer & Bow Ties will benefit the Crisis Center's Suicide Prevention services.
