Lumen Gentium Award Winners honored for humble service, remarkable accomplishments
By Daniel J. Holmes, RI Catholic Correspondent
WARWICK — It was over a year-and-a-half ago that the Diocese of Providence announced the winners of its 2020 Lumen Gentium Awards, with plans made to honor them at a ceremony and banquet scheduled for May 13 of that year. The presentation of the awards (which recognize service to the Church across a wide range of categories) has become a major event for the diocese, with the 2019 Award Banquet attracting close to 1,000 guests and raising over $86,000 for Catholic Youth Ministry. With such a precedent, it seemed reasonable at the outset of 2020 to expect a similarly grand celebration for the presentation of the 8th annual awards that spring.

Helping senior priests who have served the diocese for decades
Consider a gift to the Senior Priest Retirement Fund online or during the collection at your parish Sept. 18-19
This annual collection provides major assistance for Rhode Island’s retired priests who live independently in retirement, when after active ministry, they no longer rely upon their parishes for support. And since they were paid a very modest wage, they also receive a minimal Social Security benefit. To help retired priests meet everyday needs like food, housing, transportation and health care, the Diocese of Providence established the Senior Priest Retirement Fund in the mid-1960s.

What Makes You A Catholic?

So, while I was walking down the aisle of a local supermarket recently, a very nice gentleman passing by asked me, out of the clear blue, “How are the Steelers going to do this year?” That was it. No, “Are you Bishop Tobin?” or “Hi Bishop, how are you doing?” or “I’m surprised to see you here, Bishop,” just “How are the Steelers going to do this year?”

Congress is about to vote on the most radical abortion bill of all time.
The so-called “Women’s Health Protection Act” (H.R. 3755/S. 1975) would impose abortion on demand, at any stage of pregnancy. It would apply nationwide—even in states that don’t want it.

Diocese to take part in Rosary Congress
PROVIDENCE — All are invited to participate in the upcoming Rosary Congress taking place throughout the Diocese of Providence October 2 – 8.
The Rosary Congress will consist of 7 days/nights of perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, the recitation of the Holy Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Rosary Congresses have been held all across the U.S. since 1979 in response to Our Lady of Fatima’s call to conversion, consecration and prayer and are offered in a spirit of reparation, for life, peace and healing.
Locally, seven parishes in the diocese will host one day of Eucharistic Adoration each. Please consider spending an hour with our Lord.
