The Unity of the Eucharist

In my nearly forty-nine years as a priest, I have celebrated Holy Mass thousands of times. And even though it has become a very familiar part of my routine, sometimes in saying Holy Mass new insights, or at least important reminders, come to me.

Bishop Gelineau celebrates 50th anniversary of episcopal consecration

By RICK SNIZEK, Executive Editor, RI Catholic
NORTH SMITHFIELD - While the pace of life has slowed considerably for Bishop Emeritus Louis E. Gelineau, the sixth Bishop of Providence, at 93, he still remains active to the extent that he can as he marks the 50th anniversary or his episcopal consecration.
Although arthritis in his knees confines him to a special wheelchair for mobility at this point, it’s surprising to a pair of visitors from Rhode Island Catholic who haven’t seen him in person since before the start of the pandemic how quickly he can still shuffle his feet to move himself in that chair about the Villa at St. Antoine, where he resides.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK 2022
Jesus remains the guiding light for Catholic Schools as they continue to navigate through the pandemic
|
|
|
|
By LAURA KILGUS, Assistant Editor, RI Catholic
PORTSMOUTH — The annual celebration of
Catholic education in the United States — Catholic Schools Week (CSW) will take place from January 30 to February 5, 2022, with schools locally and throughout the country observing the tradition with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value that Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to the Church and communities.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has caused schools to approach their usual Catholic Schools Week celebrations with a measure of caution, some activities showcasing the spirit of Catholic schools will still take place.

GUEST EDITORIAL
Catholic educator leaves a lasting impact on all those who knew her and graced her stage

Christine Kavanagh was treasure to the school community of St. Mary Academy Bay View. A faith-filled educator, she inspired so many with her passion for the arts and a personal commitment to countless young women of mercy over the past 39 years as a faculty member and director of the school’s Performing Arts program.
Hearing of Kavanagh’s passing on January 6, at the age of 69,
took the wind out of me and so many who knew her, who were
educated by her and who loved her.
I first met Kavanagh when I started working at Rhode Island
Catholic, covering Bay View’s renowned Manhattan at the Bay
in 2010...

People’s mistakes and sins do not frighten God, pope says at audience
|
|
|
|
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — God is not frightened by people’s sins, mistakes or failures, Pope Francis said.
What God is afraid of is “the closure of our hearts — this, yes, this makes him suffer — he is frightened by our lack of faith in his love,” the pope said Jan. 19 during his weekly general audience.
Everybody must “square accounts” with what they have done, but “settling the accounts with God is a beautiful thing because we start talking and he embraces us” with tenderness, the pope said.
