As we observe today's Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus—during the month of June also dedicated to the Sacred Heart—we are reminded of the words of Pope Leo XIII: "There is in the Sacred Heart a symbol and a sensible image of the infinite love of Jesus Christ which moves us to love one another."

Blessings as they Begin their Holy Ministry
Father Daniel M. Mahoney and Father Doan V. Nguyen ordained by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin on June 5, 2021 in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul

PROVIDENCE — Following a year of great challenges, it was indeed a cathartic moment for the large gathering at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul Saturday for the ordination to the priesthood of Deacons Daniel Mahoney and Doan Nguyen.
After the last in the long line of priests stepped forward to offer each the Fraternal Kiss of Peace at the end of the Rite of Ordination, Father Doan Nguyen turned toward Father Daniel Mahoney with outstretched arms as the two embraced, knowing that not even a global pandemic had deterred them from reaching the goal they both set forth to achieve four years ago.

Priesthood always involves closeness with the faithful, pope says
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis told a group of priests studying in Rome that if they do not want to be pastors, spending time with the faithful, they should request dismissal from the priesthood and concentrate on academics instead.
“Be pastors with the scent of your sheep, persons able to live, laugh and cry with your people — in other words, to communicate with them,” the pope told the priests June 7.

The Deer And The Rosebush: A Parable
From Bishop Tobin
My friend loves roses. She sometimes even sees them as a divine sign that prayers have been answered, courtesy of St. Therese. My friend has a beautiful little rosebush in her yard that she cares for with affection. Recently the buds were full and the rosebush about to blossom, so you can imagine her disappointment when, early one morning, she ventured outside expecting to see flowering roses, only to find them all gone, snipped off by hungry deer.
It was a sad moment for my friend. I can’t repeat what she said, but suffice it to say that she likes roses a whole lot more than she likes deer.

PROVIDENCE — At this time last year, at the heart of the COVID-19 outbreak, Father Albert Ranallo had already finished marshalling a group of priests to serve in the hospital ministry — with all of its uncertainties as the virus continued to spread — and was hard at work securing enough personal protective equipment to keep them safe.
Father Ranallo, coordinator for Pastoral Care for Health Facilities in the Diocese of Providence, also serves as the pastor of St. Ann’s Church in Providence.
It is at St. Ann’s Church, 280 Hawkins St., Providence, that the Diocese of Providence’s Office of Pastoral Care for Healthcare Facilities will honor the selfless service of all essential workers who have answered the call to duty.

Catholic Communication can help to enrich and nourish our spiritual lives
From Michael F. Kieloch, Director of Communications & Public Relations for the Diocese of Providence
How we spread the Good News and make disciples of all nations, as Christ commands us (cf Mt. 28:19), can seem vastly different in 2021 than in the era of the first apostles and the early Church. Yet our calling, our missionary mandate or “Great Commission,” remains in many ways very much the same.
Through surveys and our own experience, we know we as a Church face ever-declining Mass attendance, declining belief in the perennial teachings of our faith, and what St. John Paul II describes as “entire groups of the baptized [having] lost a living sense of the faith.” (Redemtoris Missio). John Paul II calls the work before us in this modern era “The New Evangelization.”

EDITORIAL: The Hyde Amendment must be Protected
President Joe Biden’s refusal to uphold the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal tax dollars from contributing to abortions, reveals his administration’s radical pro-abortion agenda. There was a time when even most Democrats would argue abortions should be “rare,” clearly recognizing, at least in part, the inherent barbarity of the industry which disguises itself as health-care for women.
