Church capacity limits increased to 40 percent |

PROVIDENCE — Due to improving public health conditions in Rhode Island, with a decrease in reported positive COVID-19 infections — and after a request from the Diocese of Providence — churches in the Ocean State have been allowed to fill to 40 percent of their capacity, up from 25 percent, with a maximum of 125 people, as of Feb. 12.

Faith Formation Convocation to be held virtually this year

PROVIDENCE — Last March, as the Diocese of Providence was on the threshold of hosting its 53rd annual Faith Formation Convocation, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic caused life as we knew it to ground suddenly to a halt.

PROVIDENCE — Father Francis Giudice, Pastor Emeritus of SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral, is being remembered for his longtime advocacy for providing a solid educational, spiritual foundation for orphaned and poor children in Haiti. He died Feb. 5 at the age of 92.
“He did so much for so many people,” said Sue Whipple, director of Providence-Haiti Outreach, which was founded as a non-profit organization in 1997 by Father Giudice and her late father, Pat Pezzelli, a co-founding member of the board.

An Omitted Word Makes a Difference

Whether we realize it or not one word can have a big effect. On February 4, 2021, the USCCB’s Committee on Divine Worship decreed that in the English translation of the conclusion of collects (opening prayers) in the Roman Missal, “one” is to be omitted before “God.” For example, at the end of the prayer the celebrant will now say: “Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.” This change took effect on Ash Wednesday this year.

Pope Francis focuses on the three theological virtues in his Lenten message for 2021, inviting the faithful to “renew our faith, draw from the living waters of hope, and receive with open hearts the love of God.”
Grounding his reflection on the Paschal Mystery, the Pope says, “This Lenten journey… is even now illumined by the light of the resurrection, which inspires the thoughts, attitudes and decisions of the followers of Jesus.”

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Lent is a time to reconsider the path one is taking in life and to finally answer God’s invitation to return to him with one’s whole heart, Pope Francis said.
“Lent is not just about the little sacrifices we make, but about discerning where our hearts are directed,” he said, “toward God or toward myself?”
The pope’s remarks came in his homily at Mass Feb. 17 for Ash Wednesday, which included the blessing and distribution ashes, marking the beginning of Lent for Latin-rite Catholics.

February 17th was Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. It was also the start of the largest 40 Days for Life Lenten campaign to-date! An unprecedented number of cities world-wide signed up in support of this annual campaign for Life.
Praying for Help & Healing
On Ash Wednesday, Pro-Life men and women in the Diocese of Providence walked in a peaceful and prayerful procession to Planned Parenthood, where they stood together in an outdoor prayer vigil to pray for all Life - - for the lives of the many babies lost, the lives of the women and men who choose abortion and regret their decision, and for all lives touched by abortion. Participants do not judge, but rather pray that help and healing will come to those who need.

The Diocese of Providence Office of Life & Family offers hands-on ministries to help women who choose life for their babies and need assistance in taking care of them.
