In Baseball And In Faith, Let’s Keep It Simple
From Bishop Tobin
I’m a lifelong baseball fan. As a kid growing up in Pittsburgh I followed the Pirates and cheered for players like Bill Mazeroski, Bob Friend, Elroy Face, and the incomparable Roberto Clemente. My devotion to baseball provided a lot of happy, exciting summer days and nights.

But in the last few years, following baseball with its newfangled emphasis on statistics and analytics has become a lot more complicated. To be a well-informed baseball fan these days you need to know what these initials mean for pitchers: ERA, ERA+, FIP and WHIP. And for batters you have to decipher things like: AVG, OPB, SLG and OPS. Homeruns are measured now by distance, exit velocity and launch angle. And a “barrel” is a new calculation of how “squarely” a round bat meets a round ball. Go figure.

Classmates reflect on 70th anniversary of priesthood
PAWTUCKET / MATUNUCK — Eight men were ordained to the diocesan priesthood in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 19, 1951.

It was a Saturday morning. The ordination Mass began at 8 a.m., with relatively little fanfare or ceremony, as Monsignor Nicholas Iocavacci recalled.

“It was a great family celebration afterward,” he said.

Monsignor Iocavacci, 95, was one of the young men ordained that day 70 years ago. Ordained alongside him was Father Robert Randall, who is now 94 and also retired from active ministry. Over the years, both men developed a bond and friendship that remains strong seven decades since they became priests.

Rosary marathon to end with prayers that Mary undo ‘knots’ tied by COVID-19
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis will conclude the Catholic Church’s monthlong rosary marathon with special prayers to Mary, Undoer of Knots, one of his favorite titles for the mother of Jesus.

Bishop Bertram Johannes Meier of Augsburg, Germany, will bring an icon of Mary Undoer of Knots to the prayer service May 31 in the Vatican Gardens, and Pope Francis and his guests will pray that Mary will “untie the knots that oppress us materially and spiritually so that we can witness with joy to her son, our Lord Jesus Christ,” said a Vatican news release.

Peter and Paul in Philadelphia during the World Meeting of Families in this September 2015 file photo. Draw lessons from St. Ignatius’ cannonball experience, pope says
ROME (CNS) — Sometimes a person’s dreams and aspirations go up in smoke, but God always is there with bigger and better plans, Pope Francis said, pointing to St. Ignatius of Loyola as an example.

“In Pamplona, (Spain), 500 hundred years ago, all Ignatius’ worldly dreams were shattered in an instant” when he was hit in battle. “The cannonball that wounded him changed the course of his life, and the course of the world,” Pope Francis said in a video message May 23.

Pope: God resolves everything

Grade Four joined Mrs. Paolero and Kippling, a four month old puppy, to assist in the Canine Companions for Independence Training program at school. Kippling is being trained to become a service dog for someone who has a disability. Our fourth graders were up to the task of helping Kippling get comfortable around children while the students widened their perspective on the diverse needs of those with disabilities and the independence a service animal can provide.
