The Word Of God Is Our Light
One of my favorite verses about the Word of God comes from Psalm 119: “Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my steps and a light for my path.” The Word of God as a lamp to light our path – it’s a very useful image for us, isn’t it?
I wonder – have you ever found yourself in absolute, total darkness, perhaps after a storm when the power’s out, or while exploring a cave, or in a forest at night? Can be a pretty scary experience, right?

Local phase of global synod begins in dioceses around the world
By Rick Snizek, Executive Editor, RI Catholic
PROVIDENCE — On Sunday, in dioceses all around the world, the local phase of the 2023 Synod of Bishops opened.
Pope Francis invoked the synod, officially titled “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission,” but known colloquially as the Synod on Synodality, to discuss ways to broaden participation in the Church.
“Basically, it means the Church walking together and praying together and discerning together. It’s trying to discern and understand God’s will for the Church as we move into the future,” Bishop Thomas J. Tobin told the congregation in his homily at the 10 a.m. opening Mass for the local phase of the synod.

Bishop Thomas J. Tobin celebrated Holy Mass Sunday at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul to open the diocesan phase of the worldwide “Synod on Synodality” called for by Pope Francis. A local committee will meet over the next few months as part of the synodal process to discern ways to broaden participation in the Church by the faithful. Following the Mass, Bishop Tobin greeted committee member Miguel Romero, Th.D., a Salve Regina University theology professor who attended the Mass with his children, from left, Oscar, 10; Maria Iliana, 12; Simon, 7; and Ana Lucia, 15; and wife Heather Romero, Ph.D. (Photo: Rick Snizek, Executive Editor, RI Catholic)

History of Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul makes it a fitting centerpiece for anniversary observance
Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Diocese of Providence

The decision to open the diocese’s observance of the 150th anniversary of its establishment by holding a ceremony in honor of Mary, the Mother of God, in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul called attention to the cathedral itself.

With numbers growing in U.S., more Hispanics involved in church, community
By Jo Ann Zuñiga, Catholic News Service
HOUSTON (CNS) — Catholic Church officials say they are not surprised by the 2020 U.S. census showing Hispanics accounted for 51.1% of the country’s growth, rising to 18.7%, or about 62.1 million, of the U.S. population.
Eight in 10 Hispanics in the U.S. are American citizens, according to the data. And for the first time, the percentage of whites dipped below 60% in the U.S. to 57.8% in 2020, the census stated.

Celebrating 150 years of La Salle Academy history
Live Jesus in our hearts. Forever!
By Rick Snizek, Executive Editor, RI Catholic
PROVIDENCE — La Salle Academy has come quite a long way over the past 150 years, from its humble beginnings in a building on Fountain Street known as “The Brothers’ School,” in recognition of the three Christian Brothers who arrived in Providence in 1871 to operate a school under the values of St. John Baptist de la Salle. One of those founders, Brother Ptolemy (Dandurand), became the school’s first principal.
