Jesus Doesn’t Take A Vacation
From Bishop Tobin
Summer is a time when many of us take a step back from our normal routines and unwind a little bit. The slower schedule at work and school, and the nicer weather (at least here in the north), afford us the opportunity to rest, relax, recreate and recharge – perhaps by spending some time with family and friends, traveling somewhere pleasant, or just sitting on the front porch catching-up with the neighbors.

A Corporal Work of Mercy: Bishop Thomas J. Tobin dedicates Saints Peter & Paul Mausoleum
By Rick Snizek, Executive Editor, RI Catholic

CRANSTON — At the western end of St. Ann Cemetery, in a bucolic grove, stands the Diocese of Providence’s newest place of rest for the dearly departed.

With its twin 50-foot-high towers the Saints Peter & Paul Mausoleum bears a resemblance to the diocesan cathedral in downtown Providence. The newly finished 22,000 square-foot building, which will provide much-needed interior and exterior burial space for 2,086 caskets and 720 cremation niches, is a work of art, crafted of some of the finest materials available.

Pray with us!
Tuesday, June 29 is the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul
Saints Peter and Paul are the principle pillars of the Church founded by Christ and they are the patron saints of the Diocese of Providence!

Prayer to Saints Peter and Paul
O God, who on the Solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul, give us the noble and holy joy of this day, grant, we pray, that your Church may in all things follow the teaching of those through whom she received the beginnings of right religion.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

John the Baptist and the Desire to ‘Fit in’
Editorial in the Rhode Island Catholic
“The desire to fit in is the root of almost all wrongdoing.” Those are the words of Christopher Freiman, a philosophy professor from the College of William and Mary. And his point is well-taken. So often the desire to “fit in” — the desire to be accepted by a certain group of people — the desire not to stand out in a crowd — causes otherwise good men and women to compromise their morals and do things that they know are wrong.
What would our Founding Fathers say? This is something to consider as Independence Day approaches....

Bishops vote to draft teaching document on the Eucharist
WASHINGTON (CNS) — The U.S. bishops approved by a wide margin a plan to draft a document to examine the "meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the church" following a lengthy debate during their spring general assembly. The action to move forward passed with 168 votes in favor and 55 votes against it. There were six abstentions.

The results, announced June 18, the final day of the virtual spring assembly, allow the bishops' Committee on Doctrine to draft the document and present it for discussion when the bishops reconvene in person in November.

Pope to grandparents, all elderly people: ‘You are needed’
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Writing to his peers, Catholics who have reached a venerable age like he has, Pope Francis told older Catholics that God is close to them and still has plans for their lives.

“I was called to become the bishop of Rome when I had reached, so to speak, retirement age, and thought I would not be doing anything new,” said the pope, who is 84 now and was elected when he was 76.
