ARTS ON SUNDAY Festival Series has just completed its 8th season and is so proud of its extraordinary growth. The art, crafts and music festival has doubled in size since last October with the highest attendance ever...over 1000 attendees per week!

The Festival Series provided more than 100 artists a platform to showcase their work, and also, brought many people to the Arts District for the first time to experience the many treasures it has to offer. Art for Art's Sake (The AFAS Group) wishes to thank all the Galleries in the District for opening during the Festival as it enriched the event in so many ways.

We look forward to the next ARTS ON SUNDAY Festival Series to kick-off during the month of October.

Inter_section Gallery and Art Space

Features Artist Mike Shepherd's "On The Wings of a Tiger" debuting June 3, 2011 at 7pm.

Mike Shephard
"Let's Make Out"

"On the Wings of a Tiger" is a glimpse into another possible 2011. In this alternate 2011 (heretofore called Tiger11), an event in 2002 had a different outcome. Thus the course of the next nine years was changed slightly.

Through Mike Shephard's artistic eye, and the evolution of Tiger11, we see the latest trends in home decor, signage from unappealing restaurant concepts, enigmatic corporate logos, and jarringly bright portraits of cute animals.

It is a different world. It is Mike Shephard's world.

Artworks 6
Anne Kesler Shields, "Proud", appropriated image collage, 40" x 48"

May 31 - June 25, 2011

Reception:

Sunday, June 5, 2-4 pm

Artworks Gallery presents "Diptychs", a one person installation by Anne Kesler Shields of appropriated image collages.

In this exhibit, iconic paintings from Reynolda House Museum of American Art meet their contemporary counterparts from the worlds of advertising, pop culture and current events. The show consists of a dozen pairs of photocopied images applied directly to gallery walls.  Through visual repetition and irony Shields shows us that nothing is truly new, not even the things that shock us today.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Artworks Gallery, Inc. is located at 564 North Trade Street,

Winston-Salem, NC  27101. Gallery phone: 723-5890

"Prick Your Finger Little Red"

new work by Sarah Forbess

Join us  for a meet  the artist reception in conjunction with June 3rd First Friday Gallery Hop (show on view thru June 28th) from 7pm-10pm

DESCRIPTION & ARTISTS STATEMENT:

Sarah Forbess says:

"My work is created out of the need to capture a million momentary visions. These things emerge full blown from my soul and they haunt me until they become a reality. There have been many times in my life where I found myself at a loss for words; so many times that I stumbled and failed. I found my voice in art. Art allowed me to speak, to cry out, and often reminded me to breathe. It gave me a reason to go on. There is an insanity that comes with creating. Unfinished pieces stare at me from behind bookshelves and under tables but the images in my head never stop. They never allow for a pause. I do not believe that I always see things as they truly are but I do make an attempt to capture what I do see and what I understand of this world. Each piece that I create is a part of me; a piece of the story of my life. My only hope is that the people who see my work can find a part of themselves in it; they can see what I see, and perhaps be reminded of another time or another feeling."

Piedmont CraftsmenPiedmont Craftsmen Logo

May 6 - 28, 2011

"It's All in the Pattern "

Multiple Media, Group Show, focussing on the use of repeated decorative motifs

Since 1963, Winston-Salem, North Carolina has been home to Piedmont Craftsmen, Inc., a guild founded by craft artists and collectors to honor the work of the hand.

Today, Piedmont Craftsmen represents nearly four hundred of the Southeast's most talented artisans. Exhibiting members are juried into the organization on the basis of their skill, professionalism, quality, and originality by a standards committee made up of exhibiting craftsmen. Their work includes fine handmade garments, jewelry, one-of-a-kind functional housewares and beautiful decorative objects.

At the beginning of a new millenium the consumer market is dominated by mass-produced goods and computer-generated imagery, and our daily lives are filled with objects which have rendered themselves invisible by the very nature of their plastic perfection. There are still some individuals creating hand-wrought, beautifully designed and crafted objects, and there are people and organizations that celebrate the combination of spirit, craftsmanship, and aesthetics that go into the making of those objects.

The organization carries on a centuries-old regional tradition dating back to the eighteenth century when the first Moravian settlers established their workshops, laid out their garden plots, and set up housekeeping in the lovely rolling hills of the Piedmont. Furniture makers, potters, weavers, metalsmiths and glassblowers, their goods were recognized as the finest available in the southeast.

The organization conducts workshops, mounts exhibitions, and operates a gallery and shop at 601 North Trade Street in Winston-Salem, NC. Shop hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  For more information about membership in Piedmont Craftsmen, call (336)725-1516. www.piedmontcraftsmen.org

Spring has been cool and gentle in Winston-Salem this year.  We have enjoyed plenty of rain and our gardens are thriving.  Every once in a while I take a moment to reflect on how fortunate I am to live in this part of North Carolina.  Our town is growing in a good way, and there is always something new and wonderful to do without having to leave town.  We certainly are blessed.

Look  to our website
