Peak of the Week

Something to make you smile this month!

October 11

It's My Party Day

It’s My Party Day,

a great excuse to have a party for no reason at all!

All you need to do is to

invite all your friends and

family to a fun party!

While the origins of this unofficial holiday are unknown, it is safe to say that it encourages people throwing a party to

celebrate themselves.

While one never needs a reason to have a party, It’s My Party Day is a great justification for throwing a bash just because you can!

Send out invitations, decorate the venue,

make all your favorite

party foods, put on some

fun music and

let the party begin!

Sweetest Day

The unofficial holiday was started in 1921 iCleveland, Ohio as a way to encourage women to treat their male romantic partners with sweets and candy.

On the first Sweetest Day, on October 10, 1921, a committee of 12 candy makers distributed sweets and candy to orphans and senior citizens and encouraged people

to do the same.

Sweetest Day is not a nation-wide holiday—only people in a handful of cities, including Buffalo, New York; Detroit, Michigan;

and Cleveland, Ohio

celebrate the holiday.

Make candy from scratch at home and share with your co-workers, family,

and neighbors.

You can also treat yourself or your friend to some of their favorite candy.

Chocolate

Cupcake Day

Need we say

anything more?

Did You Know…that cupcakes are known as

fairy cakes in Britain and patty cakes in Australia.

An American invention, cupcakes use the same ingredients as a regular

cake and can be

decorated just like any

other cake with icing, frosting, toppings and sprinkles.

While cupcakes come in a variety of flavors,

chocolate is one of the

most popular flavor available.

Many people make their chocolate cupcakes special by adding gourmet ingredients such as

coffee, pumpkin,

beer and whiskey.

In the 19th century, cookbooks referred to another type of cup cakes - cakes whose ingredients were measured by cups. This reference is no longer much in use.

New Entrance at The Sisters' House

By: Cathy Cahill, OSF

Through a grant from St Elizabeth Mission Society, the Sisters' House (TSH) in Tampa, FL, was able to create a more accessible entrance enabling guests with mobility issues to move easily from their cars to an entrance without a step up. This is the prayer used at the ribbon cutting and blessing of the entrance and pathway.

Blessing of the Pathway and Doorway

Pathways and doorways are simple things we might take for granted.

We move from one space to another along a path or through a doorway many times a day.

This path and doorway have been adjusted to make it easier for those with difficulty with mobility to enter The Sisters’ House.

May those who move easily over curbs and steps not take that blessing for granted.

Let us pray a blessing on this doorway and the path that leads to it.

LEADER: God, bless this pathway and all those who move along it to The Sisters’ House.

ALL: Lead us all on paths of peace and open the doors of blessing.

LEADER: Many people have entered this door before. God, we ask your blessing on each of those Franciscan Sisters of Allegany who did so much good from this house when it was Franciscan Convent.

ALL: Lead us all on paths of peace and open the doors of blessing.

LEADER: We hope to welcome many sisters in recovery to the programs and gatherings that will take place. God, we ask you to lead many to this place of spiritual growth and sisterhood.

ALL: Lead us all on paths of peace and open the doors of blessing.

LEADER: A grant from the St Elizabeth Mission Society made it possible for these improvements to be made. Good and gracious God, we ask your blessing on all those who are part of the Mission Society, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, and all those they help in the US, Bolivia, Jamaica, Brazil, and Mozambique. Prosper the work of their hands as they do your work.

ALL: Lead us all on paths of peace and open the doors of blessing.

LEADER: As we cut this ribbon may it be a sign of our openness to all the women who come. God, give us hearts that are open to others and help us to welcome all as you welcome us into your love.

ALL: Lead us all on paths of peace and open the doors of blessing.

"A Farewell Prayer"

By: Clara Pereira, Photographer

Shared by: Kathie Uhler, OSF

"A Farewell Prayer documents the last days prior to

St. Anthony's Convent, on Prince Street in Soho, NY, closed.

At the time, four nuns lived there. Sisters, Kathie, Lois, Gloria, and Rita were a

former educator, nurse, accountant, and missionary, respectively, and

had lived in the building for many years.

Sister Kathie was there for 25 years, Lois for 37, Gloria for 13, and Rita for 40.

The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany had been in the convent building since 1955.

In 2018, the priest sold the convent and they had to vacate the premises on June 1st.

They went to live separately."

Clara's project “A Farewell Prayer” won an honorable mention at the International Photo Awards (IPA) of 2022.

"She spontaneously arrived at the Convent door one day in May 2018. We four (Gloria, Lois, Rita Francis and myself) conferred and then allowed her to take pictures of us, not posed, but as we were living out those days." - Kathie Uhler
