Hello Misty ,
The Graduate School at CSU Pueblo issues a newsletter on the 2nd and 4th Fridays each month. We thought you'd like to see what our current graduate students are up to and how we are supporting them.
This edition spotlights one of our doctoral students in nursing.
We welcome your input on these Newsletters-- send us an email and tell us how we are doing!

Spotlight on a Student: Jennifer Hahm, MPH | |
Meet Jennifer Hahm, a charge nurse at a senior living center in northern Colorado. Jennifer is graduating from CSU Pueblo's nursing program with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) and a Master of Science in Nursing.
When her degrees are conferred next month, we will call her Dr. Jennifer Hahm.
These are not her first degrees: in 2004 she earned a bachelor's degree in nursing and then in 2007 a master's degree in public health in South Korea. She is a registered nurse with fifteen years of experience in pre-op, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), pain management, and rehabilitation.
|
About Jennifer's research:
The clinical assessment of pain in older adults presents a number of challenges, especially in relation to communication with cognitively impaired individuals. Inadequate assessment and treatment of pain in people with dementia may have adverse pharmacological, physiological, psychological, and behavioral consequences. In her research, Jennifer taught Registered Nurses to use the observational Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia Scale (PAINAD) scale in order to capture early pain-related behaviors and to more systematically estimate the severity of pain in patients with dementia. She compared the use of the PAINAD to a more traditional pain treatment measure, the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS).
She collected before she trained the nurses and again 8-weeks after training and used a paired t-test to analyze the differences in pain treatment events.
Here results were striking: Pain treatment was more effective after intervention with the PAINAD scale (100%) compared to the NRS control group (70% effective) for these older adults with dementia.
| |
|
Importance of her research:
Jennifer's findings suggest that the PAINAD scale can detect hidden pain that the NRS scale could not detect in older adults with moderate-to-severe dementia. The PAINAD scale may improve nurses' pain assessment skills.
Plans for her future:
Jennifer says she will use her DNP to continue to focus on the geriatric population and pain management because this population is a very vulnerable group of patients.
In addition, she wants to teach nursing students and be a mentor to help nursing leaders to build a knowledge of research, nursing informatics, statistics, ethics, and the various medical technology required to evaluate and treat demanding patients.
What she values about her program:
Jennifer says a big advantage of her BSN-DNP program was the hybrid learning environment. Many BSN-DNP students are full or part-time nurses, and the hybrid learning environment allows them to manage their time while making in-person connections and networking. She appreciated the online component because it gave her the chance to form and contribute a thoughtful response. Above all, she says all graduate nursing faculty supported her with the DNP project and acute care, including clinical rotation and that "They were very passionate about what they do, so it will help me become the best provider or nurse practitioner I can be."
Congratulations to Jennifer on her accomplishments!
