A Message from the President
Dear East Catholic Family,
Summer is here! Now that final exams are done, the Tom Malin Golf Tournament is in the books, and temperatures are getting warmer, we are settling into our summer pace. Report cards were sent out today, and faculty and students are getting a well-deserved break. For the summer staff who continue to wrap up this year and prepare for next year, offices are open Monday through Thursday from 9:00-2:00. Please let us know of anything you need over the summer.
The academic year wrapped up last Wednesday with final exams. It was a great year for our students. In the classroom, on the stage, in service to others, or on the athletic field, our students continually showed their skill and determination in all that they did. There are two accomplishments of note which you can read about below. First off, Sarah Siolkowski made it to the finals of the Girls Tennis State Open and played great, but eventually lost to an amazing opponent from New Canaan, 3-6 and 5-7. Congratulations on a great career Sarah, and good luck at Haverford! Also, the Boys Golf Team finished off an excellent season with a Division III State Championship! Way to go boys! They are in discussion with administration about what day they will select for a day off next year, stay tuned!
At this time of year, we inevitably have a few teachers moving on, and we want to thank them all for their years of service to our students and school. Mr. James Roberts is leaving us for the sunny skies of Florida. Mrs. Kathy O’Neill Reilly '83 is moving to E.O. Smith High School. Ms. McKenna Sweeney is moving to Maloney High School. We thank all three of these wonderful teachers for their time at East and look forward to hearing about their future successes.
The theme for next year is “Keep the Faith,” and our One Book One Community summer read is Counting Miracles by Nicholas Sparks. Please have your student read the book over the summer as they will begin the year studying the novel in their English classes.
We also have two changes of note for next year. The first is an adjustment to the daily class schedule. We will be removing the Flex period before 5th period and will make 2nd period a longer block. Additionally, advisory period will be a bit longer on both advisory and non-advisory days, partly to accommodate weekly Mass with Father Daniel. The second is a change to the administrative structure. I will remain President, but I will be spending more time fundraising and meeting with alumni and donors. Ms. Gina Burby will become Principal, and Mrs. Jan Reilly will remain Dean of Student Life.
Please note that summer hours will begin on June 15th and go until August 14th. Offices are open from 9:00-2:00, Monday through Thursday. Offices are closed on Fridays.
This is the last News from the Hill for this year. I will send a midsummer letter out and restart this newsletter in late August. I wish everyone in the East Catholic family a blessed and relaxing summer. Stay safe and be well!
Peace,
Sean P. Brennan ‘85
