A Message from the President
Dear East Catholic Family,
I hope you are all doing well in this Lenten season. We continue to work our way through the school year, and as you know, things get pretty busy in these final months. We are in the 4th quarter of the academic year, spring sports have begun, and Senior activities are ramping up.
On Wednesday, we had our "50 Days until Graduation" luncheon. This is the fourth year we have had the event, and it is a chance to celebrate the Senior class as they get ready to graduate and transition to being alumni. This year, our two young alumni who spoke to the Class of 2025 were Megan Russo ’14 and Andrew Kim ’11. Megan talked about her journey after East and her current work at NBC in New York. Andrew is a Major Gifts Officer at Southern Connecticut University. Many thanks to Megan and Andrew for sharing some time with us!
Seniors also participated in their final All-School Mass today. Father Matt gave a great homily, and after Mass we were able to recognize our Summa Scholars – Brianna Flores, Michael Machewirth, Brendan Raykoff, and Olivia Riley – as well as our O’Brien Scholars – the previous four, Jason Dufresne, Daniel FitzGerald, Zoya Goyal, Melanie Plausse, Anna Tevelde, and Christian Tjagvad. Congratulations to all!
Our Spring Gala is this evening, and we look forward to seeing many of our East Catholic family there. Thank you to all who will attend and to those who have contributed to the auction and raffles. We will let you know how it goes!
Looking ahead, we have one more week of classes before Spring Break, which runs from April 12th to the 21st. Offices are open from 9:00-2:00 from 4/14-17 and are closed on 4/18 and 4/21 for Easter. Classes resume on 4/22. We are combining the Senior Awards ceremony with our school-wide Academic Awards on Wednesday, April 23rd. There is a Blood Drive on April 24th. Many more events to come, but wishing you all a safe and enjoyable Spring Break and a blessed Easter!
Peace,
Sean P. Brennan ‘85
Chief Administrator

Light of Christ Award
The Annual Educators Mass and Celebration was held at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford on May 1st. During the ceremony, Laura Marcucio was named as a recipient of the 2024-2025 Light of Christ Award. This award, presented by the Archdiocese of Hartford and the Archdiocese of Hartford Catholic Schools, recognizes outstanding teachers whose lives are guided by Catholic principles, who serve as inspirational role models to students and peers, and who consistently demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning.
A member of the East Catholic faculty since 2005, Laura Marcucio was nominated by colleagues for consistently impacting the culture at East Catholic. As an educator, she fosters an environment rooted in kindness, compassion, and service. Her involvement in the Kairos retreat since its inception, paired with her leadership in initiatives like this year's school theme "Love Thy Neighbor" and "One Book, One Community" program, has had a lasting influence on the school's spiritual life. Her leadership in the Human Rights Club and the Latin American and Caribbean Club provides opportunities for student growth and expression and models Catholic social teachings. Through her efforts in the classroom and in the community, Laura has helped create a culture of hope, inclusivity, and service, encouraging students to live out their Catholic values and make a positive difference in the world.
Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Mrs. Marcucio!

Robotics Competition
Last weekend Aetos Dios FRC Team 7153 competed at the NE District event in Hartford, placing 2nd in the competition! They were also winners of the prestigious Engineering Inspiration Award.
The Engineering Inspiration Award celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team's school or organization and community. Inspiring others to respect science and technology requires passion, knowledge, and commitment, and those qualities are recognized through this award.
When speaking about our Aetos Dios team the judges acknowledged, "In FIRST, we don't just build robots, we build futures. Being a 4H team they appreciate that local outreach is the key to their success. This team has the ability to focus on accommodations and accessibility for their community with physical or invisible disabilities. From the hearing impaired to Crocheting Critters for kids- they get it."
With these wins under their belts, they move on to the New England District Championships. Competition begins Wednesday evening and takes place all day Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Congrats, Robotics!

Project Purple
On behalf of the Boys Lacrosse Team:
Starting this year, the East Catholic Boys Lacrosse team will be raising money for Project Purple and dedicating our game vs. Suffield HS to honor Coach Bradley Paul.
Bradley was a player, a 2012 graduate of East Catholic High School, and was extremely passionate about the game of lacrosse which he continued to play through college. At the young age of 25, Bradley was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. After his diagnosis, Bradley joined the coaching staff at East Catholic with Coach Bushnell and former assistants Coach Bianchi and Coach McOmber (now coaching at Suffield HS), where he was a vital part of the team's success.
Bradley brought a new perspective to life and the game of lacrosse and taught that to his players, so they could view lacrosse as more than just any old game. He was teaching the ways of the "Medicine Game," and he left a lasting impact on every player who played for him.
Unfortunately, Bradley passed away this past July, but through this game, his spirit will live on.
Please click the link below or scan the QR Code to donate to Project Purple to help fight Pancreatic Cancer.
A donation of $30 will get you an East Catholic Project Purple T-Shirt which we kindly ask you to wear to our game on April 26th.
Donations with a T-Shirt must be in before April 10th or you will not receive your shirt in time for the game. If you have questions about other ways to donate, please reach out to Coach BushnelI personally.
