East Catholic High School's Newsletter

A Message from the President

Dear East Catholic Family,

Summer is here! Now that final exams are done, the Tom Malin Golf Tournament is in the books, and temperatures are getting warmer, we are settling into our summer pace. Report cards were sent out today, and faculty and students are getting a well-deserved break. For the summer staff who continue to wrap up this year and prepare for next year, offices are open Monday through Thursday from 9:00-2:00. Please let us know of anything you need over the summer.

The academic year wrapped up last Wednesday with final exams. It was a great year for our students. In the classroom, on the stage, in service to others, or on the athletic field, our students continually showed their skill and determination in all that they did. There are two accomplishments of note which you can read about below. First off, Sarah Siolkowski made it to the finals of the Girls Tennis State Open and played great, but eventually lost to an amazing opponent from New Canaan, 3-6 and 5-7. Congratulations on a great career Sarah, and good luck at Haverford! Also, the Boys Golf Team finished off an excellent season with a Division III State Championship! Way to go boys! They are in discussion with administration about what day they will select for a day off next year, stay tuned!

At this time of year, we inevitably have a few teachers moving on, and we want to thank them all for their years of service to our students and school. Mr. James Roberts is leaving us for the sunny skies of Florida. Mrs. Kathy O’Neill Reilly '83 is moving to E.O. Smith High School. Ms. McKenna Sweeney is moving to Maloney High School. We thank all three of these wonderful teachers for their time at East and look forward to hearing about their future successes.

The theme for next year is “Keep the Faith,” and our One Book One Community summer read is Counting Miracles by Nicholas Sparks. Please have your student read the book over the summer as they will begin the year studying the novel in their English classes.

We also have two changes of note for next year. The first is an adjustment to the daily class schedule. We will be removing the Flex period before 5th period and will make 2nd period a longer block. Additionally, advisory period will be a bit longer on both advisory and non-advisory days, partly to accommodate weekly Mass with Father Daniel. The second is a change to the administrative structure. I will remain President, but I will be spending more time fundraising and meeting with alumni and donors. Ms. Gina Burby will become Principal, and Mrs. Jan Reilly will remain Dean of Student Life.

Please note that summer hours will begin on June 15th and go until August 14th. Offices are open from 9:00-2:00, Monday through Thursday. Offices are closed on Fridays.

This is the last News from the Hill for this year. I will send a midsummer letter out and restart this newsletter in late August. I wish everyone in the East Catholic family a blessed and relaxing summer. Stay safe and be well!

Peace,

Sean P. Brennan ‘85

President

Office of School and College Counseling

A Message from your School and College Counselors

We wanted to take a few minutes to plug one of our Early College Experience Programs at UCONN to start you thinking about the next year. The UCONN ECE currently is one of the oldest (founded in 1955) programs in the country, and boasts one of the largest programs, with over 20,000 students statewide being involved. That's over 120,000 credits earned, with a 92% success rate. Need more stats to convince you? Sixty percent of admitted students to UCONN are ECE alumni. Students can take ECE courses beginning their Junior Year. For any questions, please come see your counselors.

In other UCONN news, there is still room in some of the pre-college summer programs, both at the Storrs campus for residential, or the Hartford Campus for the Day Program. The Hartford campus is now offering classes from the school of nursing, the school of social work, and public policy. Click here to find out more- applications close by June 1st:

THE EAST CATHOLIC EAGLES ARE YOUR 2026 CIAC DIVISION III GOLF STATE CHAMPIONS

East Catholic fired a team score of 313, topping second-place Coventry (318) to secure the 15th state championship with the program! (And another to add to Coach Malin’s collection! Congrats, Coach!)

A huge congratulations to Charlie Hathaway, who captured the individual State Championship with a 2-under-par 70.

Henry Barry and Logan Schoolcraft finished among the Top 15 individual scores.

Scores:

* Charlie Hathaway - 70 (-2)

* Henry Barry - 78 (+6)

* Logan Schoolcraft - 80 (+8)

* Quinn Kelly - 84 (+12)

* Bennett Watkins - 88 (+16)

Congratulations to the entire team on an incredible performance!

Congrats, Sarah!

A June 9th Semifinals win for Sarah Siolkowski ’26 landed her a spot in the June 10th Championship match of the Singles State Open! A well-fought battle would leave Sarah to claim the runner up spot of the tournament.

Throughout her four years as an Eagle she has put up incredible numbers, winning countless matches! A lock in the #1 Singles match, most times giving the EC Girls Tennis squad momentum for the match. A 4-time All-State select, Sarah is an incredible athlete who certainly left her mark on CT Tennis.

Summer Service Hours

Students can complete some or all of their 10 hours of service over the summer for the upcoming academic year. There are several organizations that East Catholic partners with looking for help like Army & Navy in Manchester and St. Vincent de Paul in South Windsor. It's never too early to think about your 10-hour service requirement. Campus Ministry encourages students to volunteer over the summer, especially if schedules are busy during the school year. Students should enter their service hours in Mobile Serve so they don't forget!
