First Hawaiian International Auto Show opened today at the Hawaii Convention Center and the HART Team is among the exhibitors! Representatives of the Honolulu Rail Transit Project will be on hand for all three days of the event to share the latest Project information and answer any questions.

INRIX RESEARCH PUTS COSTS FOR U.S. COMMUTERS AT MORE THAN
$10,000 PER DRIVER IN 2017
The study determined that the average U.S. driver spent more than $10,000 in vehicle ownership costs in 2017, an amount that is at best, a conservative estimate when it comes to drivers in Hawaii. The study was limited to ten U.S. cities and given that Hawaii has the second highest gas prices in the country, behind only California, it figures that Hawaii drivers paid a significantly higher amount that the $10,288 figure reported by the INRIX study.
In the first-ever study of its kind, INRIX calculated both the direct and indirect costs of vehicle ownership. The study identified direct costs (as defined by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration) as costs to purchase or lease a car, depreciation, fuel, maintenance, and insurance costs, as well as parking and toll fees. To calculate indirect, or "hidden", costs, the study accounted for wasted productivity, costs associated with carbon emissions,
 parking fees, and accumulated fees.
In terms of indirect costs alone, such as sitting in traffic and searching for parking, U.S. drivers spent on average, $3,037 per driver in 2017.
As the future centerpiece of Oahu's multi-modal transportation network, the Honolulu Rail Transit Project will provide residents and visitors with a viable, reliable, and safe transportation option. By 2030, rail will provide more than 120,000 passenger trips per day.
There will be 40,000 fewer car trips on any given day, which will save about 20,000 gallons of gasoline - per day! That alone, not including maintenance, insurance, etc., will save Oahu drivers more than $20 million per year, not to mention the benefits to our environment.

Oahu's First Smart Transit Card
The HOLO Card is Oahu's first transit smart card. In the near future, passengers on TheBus,TheHandi-Van and the Honolulu rail transit system will use it to pay their fares and "GO ANYWHERE", while moving seamlessly between and among the island's public transportation services. The City will soon launch a pilot program to begin testing the HOLO Card on its bus fleet.
The HOLO Card allows transit riders to simply tap their cards at a HOLO Card reader each time they board TheBus and TheHandi-Van or in the future when they enter a rail station. Each tap debits a user's card account with an associated fare cost. Fares will be determined by the members of the City's Rate Commission.
In addition to regular adult fare cards, plans call for there to be discounted fares for certain other groups such seniors, youth and students, as well as passengers with disabilities.
When implemented, public transportation customers will be able to monitor their HOLO Card balances and reload card values online by visiting
www.HOLOCard.net
, by using your Smart  Phone, or by accessing one of the fare vending machines which will be located at the rail system's 21 rail stations.
In addition, cards will be able to be purchased and reloaded at more than 100 participating stores in HOLO Card retail network all across Oahu, at Satellite City Hall locations, or at TheBus Customer Services Center.

MARKING "NATIONAL WORK ZONE AWARENESS WEEK", HDOT URGES DRIVER AWARENESS
In 2016, 765 people were killed in highway work zone crashes across the country. Many of these deaths could have been prevented if the drivers involved had slowed down and  followed construction zone signage.
The Honolulu Police Department is also reminding drivers of Hawaii's "Move-Over Law", which requires drivers in the vicinity of approaching emergency vehicles to move over or slow down to a reasonable and prudent speed. Failure to comply with the "Move-Over Law" may result in a traffic citation, followed by a mandatory court appearance and up to a $1000 fine.
