BOARD ADOPTS HAWAIIAN STATION NAMES
The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation’s Board of Directors has unanimously approved a resolution to assign Hawaiian names to each of the twelve rail stations on the Diamond Head side of the Honolulu Rail Transit Project between Aloha Stadium and Ala Moana Center.

The station names were developed by HART’s Hawaiian Station Names Working Group, whose members used diverse community knowledge, oral accounts, and written historical records of significant sites in Hawaii culture to produce its list of proposed Hawaiian names. Last April, the Working Group began receiving public comment on the names. The group then met last summer, and made a final determination of the Hawaiian names to bring to the HART Board of Directors for its approval.

The twelve Hawaiian names for the rail stations approved by the Board are:

Station Name Location
♣ Makalapa Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam
♣ Lelepaua Daniel K. Inouye International Airport
♣ Āhua Lagoon Drive
♣ Kahauiki Middle Street – Kalihi Transit Center
♣ Mokauea Kalihi-Dillingham Boulevard
♣ Niuhelewai Honolulu Community College - Kapālama
♣ Kūwili Iwilei
♣ Hōlau Chinatown
♣ Kuloloia Downtown-Bishop Street and Nimitz Highway
♣ Ka‘ākaukukui Civic Center-South Street and Halekauwila Street
♣ Kūkuluae‘o Kākā‘ako
♣ Kālia Ala Moana Center

Last year, the HART Board approved the Hawaiian names for the nine stations on the ‘Ewa end of the project.

“HART extends a warm mahalo to the members of the working group for their dedication to this important and significant naming effort,” said HART Executive Director and CEO Andrew Robbins. “Hawaiian names for our rail stations help to keep alive the traditions, culture and history of this special place.”

TEACHER DAY AT RAIL OPERATIONS CENTER
On January 27, HART and Hitachi Rail Honolulu hosted more than a dozen teachers from Kapolei and Waipahu High Schools for a behind-the-scenes look at the Rail Operations Center in Waipahu.

Hitachi is putting together an internship program for students from those schools to learn about career opportunities in rail.

The teachers were invited to tour the facility and experience the control center of the fully-automated system. They also got to hop aboard one of the trains.

Oahu’s rail system will open for introductory service between Kualaka'i (East Kapolei) and Hālawa (Aloha Stadium) Stations by the end of this year.
