THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE -

Horn Point Laboratory

APRIL 2023

From the Director's desk:

Four months into directing the Horn Point Laboratory I am more impressed than I could have hoped by the quality of the research and the people here. This year Horn Point is celebrating our 50th year. As a learning institution we will be spending the year reflecting on our history - that of the land we occupy, the community we are a part of and the successes we have had. We hope you will join us in the coming months as we celebrate the past 50 years of science and explore the next 50 years. Stay tuned! I look forward to meeting you soon, Mike Sieracki

NEW INSIGHTS ON WHY IMPROVEMENTS TO

CHESAPEAKE BAY REMAIN A CHALLENGE

A new look at the history of water quality in the Chesapeake Bay sheds light on how the estuary has responded to nutrient reduction efforts and why improvements have remained a major challenge. Horn Point Laboratory Professor Ming Li and his former student Wenfei Ni looked at the Bay’s historic response to efforts to reduce nutrients to minimize dead zones—areas with too little oxygen to support marine life—and found there is a pollution threshold after which it takes twice the effort to make a change. 9th RYAN SABA MEMORIAL STUDENT

FELLOWSHIP AWARDED

The Horn Point Laboratory (HPL) awarded the 9th Ryan Saba Memorial Student Fellowship to Bruna Sobrinho a 5th year PhD student at HPL. The $3,000 award is presented annually to support a HPL graduate student in the pursuit of their professional goals and dreams in the field of environmental science. The Fellowship’s award will allow Bruna to attend the 20th International Conference on Harmful Algae (ICHA) which will be held in Hiroshima, Japan in November 2023. Bruna shared, “This conference will be extremely important not only for my professional career, as it brings together the world's leading experts on harmful algae, but also for my personal life, as it will allow me to meet people from different cultures and visit another country. Further, it is a privilege to receive the Ryan Saba Fellowship this year and honor a person so dear to his family and community at the Horn Point Laboratory.” READ MORE

PAVING A FUTURE FOR MINORITIES IN AQUACULTURE

Horn Point Lab master's student, Imani Black, shares her story on MPT's "Maryland Outdoors". Pursuing her master's in ecological anthropology, Imani is introducing and nurturing women and minorities towards a career in oyster aquaculture. Imani is in her second year of studies at the Horn Point Laboratory. As a child she attended Horn Point's youth outdoor summer education program where she says, "I got bit by the bug! My love for this space started here and now I get to be here as a student". WATCH Imani's story on MPT's "Outdoor Maryland" READ about Imani's journey in the magazine "National Fisherman"
