Five Portland Streetcar Stations Closing
  Stations Slated for Trial Closure
Five Portland Streetcar stations on the West Side are scheduled to close February 1 on a trial basis, as Streetcar staff evaluate whether a consolidation of stations can improve safety and service for riders.

The stations are located at points along the streetcar lines that pose collision risks, contribute to the slowing of the streetcar and traffic, or where there are other stops nearby.

The five stations scheduled for closure are: *  NW 10th & Everett *  NW 11th & Everett *  SW 10th & Stark *  SW 1st & Harrison (both directions)

Three of the five stations pose safety concerns, including a risk of collision with cars or because they are placed on a slope, making it difficult for streetcars to start and stop.

When Portland Streetcar began service in 2001, it was the first of the country's modern streetcar systems. To serve the needs of passengers at that time, stations were placed every 2-3 blocks.

As the system has grown, ridership has grown threefold, making speed and reliability even more important. In addition, much of the feedback from Streetcar riders over the years has centered on the need to increase speed, frequency and reliability.

On newer Streetcar lines, stations are being placed every 3-5 blocks to increase system speed. For the trial station closures, only stations located within two blocks of another station will be closed.

Parking and Riding?
Four Tips To Prevent Car Break Ins
Car break-ins are crimes of opportunity! If thieves see something of value through the window, that is opportunity.

Don't give thieves the opportunity! Do not leave valuable items visible in your car. If possible leave them at home or take them with you.

Stow Before You Go! Stow items in the trunk, under the cargo cover or in the console before you leave your driveway.

Lock Your Vehicle! If you don't, thieves will not only take what's inside but will steal the car too!

If you see anyone hanging around a Park & Ride, spot an item on the platform, Call 9-1-1 or alert a Trimet employee.

Trees Planted in Kerns Last Month!
  Friends of Trees
The Kerns neighborhood tree planting event was held last month. Many volunteers came out to plant about 150 trees total in Kerns, Laurelhurst, Sunnyside, and North Tabor!

Special thanks to the Bamboo Sushi team who has been volunteering for years, and generously gave out random gift cards to participants!

Stumptown donated coffee, the new New Seasons on Broadway donated breakfast food, Voodoo donated donuts, Laughing Planet (whose headquarters is in Kerns) donated burritos, Grand Central donated bread, and neighbors donated soups!

Many thanks to everyone involved to make this such a successful planting and for helping to make our neighborhood greener!

It will be Kara's last year as neighborhood coordinator, so they are looking for a new one! Let Kara know if you have any interest. Kara Eads, Neighborhood Coordinator. More info.
