Let’s take a look at science fiction and fantasy as we continue to celebrate Black History Month. A good place to start is with N.K. Jemisin, the only writer to have won back-to-back-to-back Hugo Awards for books in the same series: her “Broken Earth” series. Start with The Fifth Season, or if you want to sample something shorter try one of the stories in How Long 'til Black Future Month? Jemisin’s most recent title is the fabulous The City We Became; watch five New Yorkers battle an alien power for the safety of the city. Another terrific author to check out is Octavia Butler, author of the “Patternist” series, the “Parable” series (start with Parable of the Sower) and probably her best known title, Kindred, which follows a young Black woman, Dana, from 1976 Los Angeles back in time to an early 19th century Maryland plantation where she meets her ancestors. Ta-Nehisi Coates’ The Water Dancer is also set in the pre-Civil War South; Hiram’s superpower of conduction leads him work with the Underground Railroad. Also worth taking a look at: Nnedi Okorafor, who writes African-based science fiction and fantasy; notable titles include Binti and Who Fears Death. Victor LaValle is the author of fantasy/horror novels The Changeling and The Ballad of Black Tom. Cadwell Turnbull’s The Lesson finds people in the US Virgin Islands forced to deal with a super-advanced alien race.
