Lovejoy Community,
Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend my very first Lovejoy STEM Festival. STEM Festival is a celebration of the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics held at Lovejoy High School. Lovejoy’s STEM Festival provides the opportunity for families to participate in hand-on activities that inspire enthusiasm about STEM. We are deeply grateful to the parents, students, and staff that volunteer their time to make this an outstanding community event.
I had the pleasure of attending the STEM Festival with my family and we sequenced our DNA, launched water rockets, held a praying mantis, examined a wolf pelt, experienced the aerodynamics of an airplane wing, observed the lifecycle of zebra fish, utilized digital design software, and toured the Verizon telecommunications disaster recovery vehicle. This is an impressive list and it is not even close to the full list of outstanding STEM opportunities that were available. Jacob talked about how much fun he had for the rest of the weekend and Claire shared her plans to clone herself using her extracted DNA.
I am continually humbled by the incredible people that align their actions with our commitment to community, connection, and student opportunity. This event would not be possible without the efforts of our Curriculum and Instruction Department, STEM Festival Planning Committee, volunteers, and the generous donations of our sponsors.
There is only ONE LOVEJOY and we are ALL LEOPARDS!
Lovejoy Proud,

LOVEJOY HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL UPDATE | | | | | |
|
|
Chris Mayfield, Lovejoy High School Principal, has announced his resignation. Mr. Mayfield has one year before retirement and plans to spend it in the classroom teaching. Mr. Mayfield and his wife, Christy, are considering moving closer to family in East Texas which is also where they plan to retire. Mr. Mayfield will be here until the end of June.
We are deeply grateful for Mr. Mayfield’s 12 years of dedicated service to Lovejoy High School and

wish him and his family new joys in this next chapter. Mr. Mayfield was instrumental to the implementation of Lovejoy ISD’s secondary program. During his tenure as Lovejoy High School principal, students and teachers have achieved remarkable accomplishments.
We understand the important work that lies ahead in hiring the next Principal of Lovejoy High School. Stakeholder input will be a valued part of the process. To this aim, we are scheduling time for Lovejoy High School staff and parents to share characteristics they are looking for in the next leader of Lovejoy High School. Additionally, the students that serve on the High School Superintendent-Student Connection Council will have the opportunity to provide input.
We have scheduled the following dates to obtain parent input. We hope you will be able to join us for one of these meetings.
Lovejoy Parent Input Sessions:
Monday, May 16 at 8:00 a.m. in the Lovejoy High School Lecture Hall
Tuesday, May 17 at 4:30 p.m. in the Lovejoy High School Lecture Hall
We are committed to ensuring strong campus leadership and will work diligently to find a leader who exhibits the qualities that are most important to you.
Please join us in celebrating Mr. Mayfield's significant contributions and wishing him his family all the best in the future.

5TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES
WORLD WAR II SIMULATION
| | | | |
|
This week, Sloan Creek 5th graders engaged in a World War II simulation. Some students served on the President’s Cabinet advising the President (their teachers) on how to end World War II with Japan. Other students facilitated meetings as the Chief of Staff or served as Attorney General evaluating the constitutionality of any choices made. Students filled the classroom whiteboards with homefront support recommendations and war plans. On day 2 of the simulation, a scientist visited the classroom and explained the new technology of atomic bombs. The students then debated the ethics of deploying an atomic bomb. If the decision to use the atomic bombs was made by students, they had to select targets and provide justification for this decision.
This engaging, immersive scenario generated high levels of student thinking and excitement about learning. Students drew on previous learning and utilized speaking, writing, listening, debate, evaluation, and problem-solving skills. Kudos to our 5th grade social studies teachers, Dallena Nash, Sunny Bradshaw, and Ryan Rohlmeier for providing the opportunity for our students to apply their knowledge in such a challenging and engaging way.
