On a more serious note… We Need to Talk About Cannabis
While most of us were concerned with COVID and our economy the state legislature had a rapid legalization of adult recreational cannabis. Many in our area are concerned about the widespread availability of cannabis and the safety of having both a store and the use of cannabis in our communities. There's much we still don't know about the effects of high-dose THC on brain development in children and the effects of secondhand smoke on the community.
As a trained pharmacist, I understand the rigorous process usually involved in legalizing medical substances, which hasn’t occurred with cannabis. Connecticut has sidestepped the FDA regarding recreational cannabis. We need to fully grasp the medical implications to prevent harm to individuals who may perceive cannabis as entirely safe due to its legalization. Connecticut residents should have access to comprehensive information to better understand the potential dangers of Cannabis use. To that end, I have written an opinion piece available here explaining some of the concerns we should consider as Connecticut moves forward with the legalization process.
I know many of you are concerned about the opening of the cannabis shop and dispensary on the border of Darien and Stamford. I share this concern with you. While it may be legal, it does not mean it is a good fit in every community. I will continue to push appropriate monitoring and oversight of this substance. The safety of our community depends on it.
