Holy City

Hot Dog Ministry

On Tuesday, Dec. 27, seven St. Michaelites served about 60 people in the parking lot of Citadel Square Baptist Church. Although the name is the Hot Dog Ministry, we usually serve fried chicken with a vegetable, potato salad, rolls, two kinds of fruit, water bottles and desserts. This time, East Cooper Baptist gave away new backpacks to all who came.

This is wonderful ministry and always received gratefully by the friends who come. This ministry is the only one serving supper to the homeless in Charleston.

If you would like to serve in this ministry, please contact Pat Jennings, Bellinger.56@att.net.

Neighbors Together

On Saturday December 17, the Holum family volunteered their time at the Christmas Together event giving out coats to the clients. Susan said, “the four of us volunteered on the Saturday afternoon of the Neighbors Together Christmas event. Their events are always extremely well organized and it’s apparent how much the organization and employees care for the population they serve. What a wonderful thing to be a part of! It was a joy to serve alongside my kids and husband.” Susan emphasized that the events are a great way for families to get involved. They are organized, safe, and fun.

Look for more opportunities to serve Neighbors Together and our other Holy City mission partners in the coming months.

Hurting Coast

Beginning Feb. 1, 2023, the Anglican Leadership Institute will hold its first gathering of institute participants since the death of our beloved the Rev. Dr. Peter Moore in 2020. There will be 16 participants from around the world, including our Hurting Coast Mission partner Max Graham who is on staff at New Wineskins.

Thanks to your faithful donations of mission monies, your mission committee voted to donate $9300.00 in Nov. of 2020 to the A.L.I. in memory of Peter Moore. This money was held in trust and is now being used to sponsor a scholarship for one of the attendees of the upcoming Feb. A.L.I.

In the letter below are many ways that you can currently help with making the gathering a huge success. Please contact Paige Tanenbaum, executive assistant to the new A.L.I. director, the Very Rev. Mark Lawrence (paige.tanenbaum@gmail.com) to volunteer.

Blessings,

Sherrie Driver

Committee Chair Hurting Coast

Dear A.L.I. Ambassadors, Volunteers, and Friends of A.L.I,

We are excited to announce the Anglican Leadership Institute is returning to Charleston this February 2023. The A.L.I. board voted to install Bp. Mark Lawrence as interim director, and he has appointed the Rev. Bob Lawrence to assist him during his interim directorship. Paige Tanenbaum is continuing in her position as executive assistant to the director.

Once again, we will be welcoming sixteen men and women from around the world to participate at our tenth institute. Please prayerfully consider serving as an ambassador or volunteer. There will be several opportunities to serve in various capacities and we need many helping hands.

This year’s participants will arrive Wed., Feb. 1. The training will begin the following day, Thurs., Feb. 2 and continue through Feb 22. The participants will depart on Thur., Feb. 23. This year we will house most of the participants at one property, the Sea Palace, located at 4101 Palm Boulevard, Isle of Palms. There is an additional house only a couple doors down where we will house Bp. Lawrence, Rev. Lawrence, the institute speakers, and the remaining 2-3 participants. That home is located at 14 41st Avenue.

 Opportunities to Serve:

  • A.L.I. Welcome Brunch: Sat., Feb. 4: Is your Bible study or small group available to host a Welcome Brunch at the Sea Palace property? Available brunch dates: Sat., Feb. 11 or Sat., Feb. 18.

  • Final A.L.I. Sunday Participant Luncheon, Feb. 19: Are you able to host a Sunday luncheon following church service? We need host(s) for: Feb. 19 only

  • Sun., Feb. 12, 2:30-4:30: A.L.I. Tea & Gathering of Friends honoring the life of the Rev. Dr. Peter C. Moore. Claudia Moose is organizing a group of women to host this event. If you would like to help, please contact Claudia at: jmoose1020@aol.com

  • Tues., Feb. 14, 6pm: An Evening at St. Philip’s – A Public Lecture with Dr. Paul Marshall: “The Biblical & Theological Roots of Religious Freedom”

5:30-6:00pm: Tea, Coffee, Pastries & Cookies: We need a group of volunteers from

St. Philip’s and/or St. Michael’s who can coordinate the refreshments and organize

them prior to the 5:30pm gathering.

  • A.L.I. Nightly Dinners: Anyone is welcome to organize, sponsor, or host a dinner at the Sea Palace or in their home: Brenda Cruz will be traveling from the FOCUS Study Center on Martha’s Vineyard, MA to cook the entire three weeks. She would be grateful for a night off! Contact Paige if you are interested.

  • Be an Ambassador to a Foreign Participant: Being an ambassador is not a huge responsibility, but it humanizes our institute considerably and helps build bridges between those who are foreign with those who live here. We need at least ten ambassadors who seek to do most, if not all the following:

1. Contact your participant via email or text prior to their arrival to introduce

yourself.

2. Throughout the institute touch base with your participant.

3. Past ambassadors have invited their participant to coffee, lunch, bible study,

and/or dinner. This is optional and you are welcome to do this, but it is not

required; however, we do ask that you arrange the outing during the

participant’s free time.

4. If you are available, welcome the participant at the Airport on Wed., Feb. 1

and transport them to the IOP home. Pick up your participant on Thur.,

Feb. 22 and return them to the Airport. (Note: Paige will work with you on

these details; often airport pickups & drop-offs can be shared with others.)

5. Pray for your participant throughout the institute.

Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering and how you would like to serve. Feel free to make any suggestions or propose any new ideas!

Many blessings,

The A.L.I. Team, +Mark, Bob+ and Paige
