Star Gospel Mission

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:1

On Pentecost Sunday, 129 people walked around Charleston in very early morning hours to raise money and awareness of the homeless in our city. Walk in Their Shoes raised more than $53,000 to support the life-transforming work of Star Gospel Mission, a Christ-centered ministry providing shelter, stability and spiritual hope to those in need. (See a photo of the walkers below.)

Parishioner Martha Dougherty started her part of the walk at 5:30. Here are her reflections:

As a participant, I was exhausted after walking five+ miles even, though it was early morning. It was hot and tiring and I couldn’t imagine having to walk like that or spend the night mostly awake guarding what little possessions you have and then trying to find a job or go for an interview. Thankfully, the Star Gospel Mission points people to agencies that can help provide a shower or other resources. Imagine 400+ school children who are homeless and still having to do schoolwork. It was certainly an eye-opening experience. I am so thankful that they are adding the women and children Morning Light program to support some of these families.

Would you like to help Star Gospel Mission? They serve their guests a nutritious meal daily. As they say, “It takes faith, love, and a lot of takeout containers! We’re short on the behind-the-scenes heroes — container, plasticware, gloves, wipes, etc.” If you can help, please use this link that takes you to their Amazon Wish List. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/JIN60VKRP520/ref=hz_ls_biz_ex?blm_aid=21665792

Here are ways that St. Michael’s can help our mission partner.

North Charleston Dental Outreach needs help in 3 main ways:

1) Pray that Jesus would be made known through their ministry.

2) Volunteer your time and talents to serve their mission.

They are hoping to have a small group assemble some hygiene kits and deliver them to the surrounding community to help with outreach in their immediate area. They are also always looking for volunteers to pray with their patients - especially on Thursday mornings when they have their walk-in clinic days. For more information or to volunteer, please email them via ashton@ncdo.net. Or contact Jackie Thompson, Mission Task Force member, for more information:  jthompson334@comcast.net

3) They continue to operate by the financial investment of their donors; pray for continued blessings to sustain their mission.

Lamb Institute - Honduras

In celebration of its 25 years of ministry in Honduras, the Lamb Institute has produced a series of wonderful podcasts rejoicing and remembering how the Lord has been working through it. Episode 4 shares the powerful adoption story of a family from Idaho as it prepares to welcome a little girl from the Lamb’s children’s home into their hearts and home.

Anglican Church of West Bengal - India

A message from the Right Reverend Dr. Probal Dutta:

On March 12, members of the Dalit community in Gidhagram, West Bengal entered the Gidheshwar Shiv temple, breaking a longstanding cast barrier. The Dalit families, who are traditionally cobblers and weavers, were denied entry to the temple during the festival. Cast discrimination and this practice of untouchability continue to plague India. Although 75 years have passed since untouchability was abolished under Article 17 of the Constitution, Dalits also known as schedule cast continue to be excluded from public spaces, including crematoriums.

Christianity has a different approach to humanity. In John 4:1-30, we read about the Samaritan woman who was drawing water from Jacob’s well. Jesus comes to this well and starts a dialogue with this Samaritan woman. We must note that Samaritans were somewhat lower cast and Jesus was a Jew who was from a higher cast. Jesus not only started a dialogue but he went to the extent of asking for some drinking water from her.

Paul’s letter to the Galatians 3:28 says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
