North Charleston Dental Outreach

Dr. Bill Sasser was the Mission Sunday speaker in September. Jean Corbett said:

Dr. Bill Sasser spoke passionately about his work in the North Charleston Dental Outreach ministry in North Charleston. He expressed the need for hands-on help with their patients, especially on Thursdays. The clinic takes appointments daily, except for Thursdays. On Thursdays, they accept walk-in patients. The staff would greatly appreciate folks to be available to chat with, sit with, pray with these folks as they wait for dental treatments.

After the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services, the children offered Lemonade for Missions and collected $291.69, which was sent to North Charleston Dental Outreach. (Please see below.) Thank you to all who gave.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes, The College of Charleston

We welcome Will Kenrick as the new Youth Ministry Leader and our Mission Sunday speaker at the 8 a.m., 9 a.m., and 11 a.m. services on October 22. Will plans to speak about his new role as Youth Ministry Leader and how he incorporates the FCA ministry. Will grew up in the church. It was during college in 2014 that he came to know the Lord and later attended seminary in Austin, Texas for three years. He graduated with his master’s degree in practical theology from Regent University and came to Charleston to lead the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the College of Charleston.

Hot Dog Ministry

Six times a year, St. Michael’s provides a meal for those in need in downtown Charleston. The next date is Tuesday, October 31 at 5 p.m. and the following date is December 26. The meal is served in the parking lot at Citadel Square Baptist Church. Volunteers are needed to serve the fried chicken dinner and visit with the guests. This is a good outreach opportunity for families with older children. To volunteer for October 31 or December 26, please contact Pat Jennings at bellinger.56@att.net.

Advent Angel Tree

The Angel Tree will return to help support our local mission partners this Advent and Christmas season. Please look for the Angel Tree in the narthex beginning November 19 through December 10. Select an ornament to provide a gift for the local mission partner of your choice. For families with children to join in, we will have our two partner schools, Charleston Classical and Hope Scholars Academy, participating.

BURUNDI

The executive director of the Antioch Foundation, Onesphore Manikaraza, met with members of the Mission Task Force and was interviewed by the Rev. Greg Smith during the Super Wednesday supper on September 20. He provided details on the curriculum he used to train 40 pastors at the 2023 annual convention, for which St. Michael’s provided support. The photo above depicts convention attendees.

INDIA

Bishop Probal and Rita Dutta arrived in Charleston after a ten-day visit with AB Foley Beach and other clergy in the Atlanta area. Upon their arrival, the Rev. Greg Smith welcomed the Bishop and Rita to St. Michael’s Super Wednesday crowd on September 27.

Another evening, members of the Mission Task Force and many India friends welcomed the Duttas to a covered dish dinner. Bishop Dutta presented an account of some of the many exciting accomplishments in this newly birthed Anglican Church (since 2019). Our Bishop Chip Edgar graciously welcomed Bishop Dutta with conversation and coffee. During their visit, the Duttas were house guests of Johnnie and Jean Corbett and Lynn and Hudson Rogers.

A short report from Bishop Dutta:

  • Archbishop Foley Beach (ACNA) donated funds to build a church near the Bangladesh Border
  • Two more churches are under construction — a gift given through St. Michael's
  • The second floor of St. Michael’s Safe House is nearing completion, bringing the total to 25 girls living in a safe environment.
  • Bishop Dutta invited Johnnie and Jean Corbett to India in February to dedicate the second floor of the Safe House and the two new church buildings.

GLOBAL IMPACT CELEBRATION (GIC)

Through this morning, October 16, 2023, more progress has been made with GIC 2024. The most significant step was Ruth and my visit with Samaritan’s Purse at their Boone, North Carolina headquarters on October 4th. We were their guests and started our day with them at 7:45 a.m. joining their daily corporatewide devotional. Several meetings with various executives and others followed and our day concluded with dinner.

Our host for the day was David Thompson, senior director international for Operation Christmas Child, who will be the keynote speaker at the GIC 2024 Banquet on February 1, 2024. We also spent time with executives from Samaritan’s Purse’s two other major divisions, World Medical Mission and the Disaster Assistance and Relief Team. Joining us for both lunch and dinner was James Harrelson, the head of Operations Christmas Child.

We will be relating more about David and Samarian’s Purse during the next several weeks relative to GIC 2024 and missions in general — stay tuned!

Four additional bank jars were received through this morning with approximately $160 bringing the total to 24 jars with just over $1,300 collected and deposited designated for the Mission Bible Fund. The goal is to collect a total of 100 jars by the start of GIC 2024 (January 28, 2024).

Ruth is working with Cecilia Gaddy (cecilia.gaddy@icloud.com) to reach out to the various small groups and:  First, inquire of their interest in having a mission partner speaker at their group during GIC 2024 Week; and second, inquire what mission area they would like to hear from; and third, arrange for the speaker to join them.

The silent auction continues to attract donations, with more than 35 items received or pledged as of this report. The auction website is currently in development. Special thanks to our silent auction team of Duval Acker, Normandie Updyke and Reiley Jacobs.

Publicity for GIC 2024 will begin to accelerate later this month. Thanks to Bill Biggie for his work with us in this area. More to come!

Blessings,

Bob and Ruth Bonelli
