Once each semester, St. Michael’s Church sponsors a meal for cadets who attend the chapel service at St. Alban’s Chapel at The Citadel. On September 30, we prepared and served supper to about 90-100 cadets. They very much appreciated us being there and caring for them and ate 150 barbecue sandwiches, chips, fruit, and cookies and brownies. Thank you to Jane Thornhill Schachte, Jackie Thompson, Annetta McNabb, Michael Hull, and the Brice family Miller, Mills, Grey, and their mother for helping in the kitchen, and Kate Marjenhoff for sending delicious brownies. The Brice family, Annetta, and Lynn served the meal (see photo below).

On October 10, Star Gospel Mission celebrated 120 Years of service with a gala at the Francis Marion Hotel. Several St. Michaelites attended, and the fundraising event was extremely impressive. The theme was the Stars Are Shinning. They had a sculpture of Charleston’s buildings and skyline. The guests were invited to place a star in the sky above the buildings. The higher in the sky the larger the donation. As the star was place it lit up. Star gospel is working hard to expand to help women and children who are homeless.

On Oct. 3 Johnnie and Jean Corbett attended the North Charleston Outreach “Beacon of Hope” night in Park Circle Community Center. Dr. Bill Sasser offered grateful and humble thanks to the 150-plus in attendance. Several volunteers, including Dr. Megan Finkbine former St. Michaelite, praised Dr. Bill’s ministry and the many volunteers who perform excellent dental care for the community. The banquet raised more than $43,000, which will provide basic care for 430 patients. Congratulations to Dr. Bill Sasser.

Board chairman of New Wineskins for the past seven years, Clark Smith, has recently died from a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Clark Weldon Smith peacefully sailed to heaven on September 27 at the age of 75, attended by his wife and daughter at their home in Savannah, Ga.

Clark was deeply committed to serving his community and his church, Christ Church Anglican. In 2007, he and his wife answered a call to full-time missions and founded E412 Ministries, serving in 23 countries and on U.S. mission boards. Between missions, Clark loved revisiting the mountains of his childhood by spending cherished time with family at a cabin on Lake Glenville in North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Weldon Smith; mother, Novena Harrison Smith; and sister, Wendy Smith Hughes.

Clark is survived by his loving wife Carol Rogers Smith; his daughter, Georgeanna Reese Connors; son-in-law, Mike; and grandsons, Reese and Riley, all of Asheville, N.C. He will live on as an inspiration to all who knew him.

Joy Yarborough reported that Dazz located in Orangeburg is thriving. They were able to raise $25,000 locally with their Walk for Life in September. Here are some statistics from 2023. They had 463 pregnancy tests/counseling sessions, including ultrasounds and STI testing. From those visits and counseling sessions, 44 women committed to abstinence before marriage. In addition, baby items were given away more than 300 times; they held 115 parenting class sessions; and Dazz staff and volunteers provided witness to the Gospel more than 240 times.

Support The Lemonade for Missions Fundraiser this Sunday after the 8 & 11 am services, outside on Meeting Street. All funds will go to the Lowcountry Pregnancy Center Walk For Life.
